I loved this book as a 4th grader. I was absorbed in to the gothic world that Wallace imagined. I remember reading this book for hours on end. It left such an impression on me that 25 years later I ordered the book again.

There are some authors who capture perfectly the pleasantly creepy, anxious, but somehow amusing what-next quality that makes a book a treasure, one that you re-read even when you already know how it comes out, one that you re-read even when you are a bit older than the target audience of 12-year-olds. Barbara Brooks Wallace is one of these authors, and this is one of those books. (Wallace has won a couple of Edgars for this kind of thing.) There's something about the 1890's atmosphere that comes alive in this book (albeit without surveillance cameras).

Do you like mysteries? If you do, a great choice would be Peppermints in the Parlor. After a tragic accident, Emily goes to Sugar Hill Hall to live with her aunt and uncle. She discovers her uncle is missing and her aunt is a slave in her own home. Who are Mrs. Meeching and Mrs. Plumly? Why are there old people living in the house? And can Emily trust Kipper and Tilly? Read this book to find the answers to these intriguing questions. This book is recommended because it has lots of mysteries that are solved in an exciting conclusion. There is wonderful descriptive language and similes. The plot moves along quickly. You will not fall asleep reading this book!

This is probably the best and most suspenseful book I have ever seen. Mrs Plumly and Mrs Meeching are two of the most evil people alive. They have a bowl of taunting peppermints, that are forbidden to the old residents that live there. There is also an exiting mystery where you have to find out where Uncle Twice is, and Tilly, Clarabelle the kitten, Kipper the fishmonger's boy, and Aunt Twice add to the suspense in the greatest book of all time!

I remember reading this back in the 5th grade, and remember how wonderful of a book it was. I plan on reading once again. Almost 5 years later.

Delightfully suspenseful and tastefully dark. A good book for the target audience (12-13) But really for anyone. (I read it the first time when I was 17 and I LOVED it!) Good, clean, and a delightfully spine-tingly read.

Peppermints in the Parlor is a very exciting book.It has adventure and desire. A little girl, the age of 11, has lost her parents in a recent boat accident leaving her to live with her Aunt and Uncle Twice but, once she arrives at the once most grandest beautiful suger hill hall, she finds much horror to her dismay. Her Aunt Twice was under-control by a Mrs.Meeching and a Mrs.Plumly. Also there was an orphan, like her, that was a servant girl and old people alot of them. Her bloved Suger Hill Hall now crawls with mysteries and is an orphanage and a nursing home for old people which isn't a friendly orphanage or a friendly nursing home but a terror place. Read the book to find out why.
