School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Harrington's sequel to Clarity (Scholastic, 2011) stars the highly acclaimed high school psychic and detective. Her mother is a telepath, and her brother, a medium, can contact the dead. Clare can place her hands on an object and perceive hidden visions from the past with her psychic powers. Now that she has escaped death thanks to her ex-boyfriend Justin and her connection to solving a murder in her small town, she is left to decide which of the two guys to choose: Justin or tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel, son of the new police detective in town. Trying to avoid the social scene, Clare prefers to stand in the shadows observing, but she soon starts to receive unsettling messages and gifts from a secret admirer. To top it off, a new girl has gone missing and was possibly murdered. Clare needs to guide herself quickly to the truth and crack the case. She is a strong female lead who, throughout the story, gains confidence and depth. A fast-paced psy-chick mystery.—Krista Welz, North Bergen Public Library, NJ
VOYA - Donna Miller
High school junior Clarity along with her mother and brother possess psychic gifts that set them apart from others, including the mainstream students at Eastport High School where Clare is a student. Clare becomes a bit of a celebrity, however, when she and boyfriend Justin confront a murderer, and she mistakenly thinks that she has begun to be accepted by popular Tiffany and her clique. When Clare discovers that Tiffany has had sexual relations with Justin, and Kendra continues to treat her as a freak, her illusions of acceptance are shattered. She turns to Mallory, a fellow outcast, for friendship. Meanwhile, a new love interest, Gabriel, causes Clare to further question her relationship with Justin, despite his sincere apology and appeal to get back together. In the midst of all of this turmoil, a student goes missing, and simultaneously Clare begins to receive mysterious notes from an anonymous admirer. Soon Clare starts receiving photos of herself, and the notes begin to feel more menacing than complimentary. Clare knows that Mallory is an amateur photographer, and she begins to suspect that Mallory may not be the trusted friend she pretends to be. Mean girls, two attractive love interests, a brother who is becoming more and more remote, and a potential stalker cause Clare's confusion and fear to escalate. Fans of the mystery and suspense genre, as well as the teen romance genre, will be eager to read this book and will quickly share their enthusiasm with friends. Reviewer: Donna Miller
Kirkus Reviews
This first sequel to Clarity (2011) delivers an even more involving, polished and downright nifty mystery. Clare still lives at home with her family of psychics, but this episode emphasizes suspense more than the supernatural. She's torn between ex-boyfriend Justin and hottie newcomer Gabriel (and will decide between them by the end of the book), but now she's more interested in her new friend Mallory and the disappearance of a local girl. Her mom forbids her to help with the case, but Clare can't stop herself from investigating. Mallory, a formerly shy girl who seems to be coming out of her shell, struggles to cope with events in their new friendship. Meanwhile, Clare worries that someone might be stalking her. The family's psychic abilities, especially Clare's ability to "read" objects, certainly play a part in the narrative, but Harrington more closely follows a standard mystery plot, tossing in some tasty red herrings, sprinkling clues throughout, building suspense and turning the tale at just the right time to keep readers involved. The supernatural element may entice some young readers to the book and then turn them into mystery fans. In any case, the believable characterizations, the suspense and the well-crafted plot twists score. A smart, paranormal mystery ride. (Paranormal mystery. 12 & up)

This book is honestly amazing and I loved every second of it. I feel in love with the clarity series and read both books in 1 day! This book has so many twists and turn it just keeps you guessing. SPOILER ALERT: okay i am a totally in love with gabriel and let's just say clare's choice in the end left me verrryyy satisfied, but you find out things about justin that may leave you stumped as to who she should choose. Overall this was a gret read and I can't wait for the next book. By the way if you like this book check out the touch series! I beleive the first book is Deadly Little Secrets, but if not it might be the second, either way its a book in the series LOL :)If you like this series you'll love the touch series:)

There's something about Clare that will keep me coming back for more. I love her character. I find her endearing, charming, and all around great person to read about. While Clare might not like the spotlight the events of book one have put her under, I actually think it's helped her come out of her shell a little bit. She seems to know who to trust overall, even though events lead to doubt those around her. I love that she knows what type of people the popular girls are, but basks in the limelight just a little bit. I think it helps see what a wonderful person she is. I'm also very happy to see that she's made some friends outside of Justin and her brother. I love this new popularity in YA mysteries. It's always been one of my favorites genres, but something that doesn't get a lot of play in the young adult world. I like the element of Clare's families abilities. It's a different twist to the story. It's not just good old fashioned detective work that gets the mystery solved. I also enjoyed the Clare likes to help people with the problems to the point that it draws some extremely unwanted attention to herself. I had it pegged who the culprit was, but I still enjoyed the buildup to get there. One of my favorites parts of this story was the romance. I like Justin, but I'm so proud of Clare for being so hesitant when he wants to get back together. Although, I was surprised to learn the true circumstances on the night he cheated. I don't think it changed my opinion of him very much though. Probably because I love Gabriel. I love that he doesn't push Clare into making a decision. But, he is sure to tell exactly were she stands and what he wants. I think Clare needed that push to make a decision. Great read and I can't wait for the next one!

Clarity "Clare" Fern thought things would go back to normal for her once summer ended. Except it's not so easy for people to forget the psychic girl who helped solve a murder and clear her brother's name during the tourist season in their Cape Cod town. Back at school Clare is getting a lot of unwelcome attention from the student body. Not to mention more attention than she can handle from ex-boyfriend Justin and new guy Gabriel Toscano. Both want to be more than friends. Too bad Clare isn't as certain of her own feelings yet. As Clare tries to navigate her new-found celebrity, she also starts getting unexpected notes from an unidentified sender. Could it be someone Clare knows? A shy secret admirer? Or is it something much more sinister in Perception (2012) by Kim Harrington? Perception is Harrington's sequel to her debut novel Clarity. Set during Cape Cod's off season, Perception lacks some of the excitement found in Clarity even as Harrington shines a light on Clare's more typical day-to-day life. Though the narrative often refers back to the first book, Perception explains enough to be able to stand on its own without much difficulty. All of the characters readers loved from the first book are back. Unfortunately so is Clare's unfortunate love triangle. While Justin and Gabriel both remain likable, Clare's vacillation throughout the novel grew tiresome--particularly when to some readers her choice will be obvious from early chapters.* Much like the love triangle, the mystery aspect of Perception felt a bit obvious as well. While some parts of the story will keep readers on their toes other twists will be guessed early on. Clare and her family develop a lot over the course of Perception leading to a novel whose strength lies in its characterizations. That said, Perception continues the story of a spunky, clever heroine in a fun mystery sure to leave readers smiling. *Happily, the love triangle is resolved to some extent at the end of the story so hopefully Clare, Justin and Gabriel can all move on to other things when Harrington writes another Clarity novel. I didn't realize this book was part of a series until I started reading it. The author was very good about filling in a new reader so that he/she didn't feel left out of the back story. While I felt that parts of this book moved too slowly, I still really liked it. I didn't figure out the twist until the author revealed it, which made me really happy. I definitely recommend this book.
