Meet the Author

Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan is the author of all five books in the New York Times best-selling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series: The Lightning Thief; The Sea of Monsters; The Titan's Curse; The Battle of the Labyrinth; and The Last Olympian. His previous novels for adults include the hugely popular Tres Navarre series, winner of the top three awards in the mystery genre. He lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife and two sons.

Biography

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a terrific YA series by former middle school teacher and mystery writer Rick Riordan that revamps Greek mythology in a fun, fresh way kids find enthralling. A trouble-prone teen with attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, Percy is the half-blood son of Poseidon, one of 12 Olympian gods making mischief right here in 21st-century America. Praised by critics, librarians, and teachers, the Percy Jackson books have been honored with numerous awards and appear consistently on The New York Times bestseller list.

The series grew out of a sequence of bedtime stories Riordan invented for his son Haley -- who, at eight, had just been diagnosed with learning disabilities. Although Haley was having trouble in school, he loved the Greek myths and asked his dad to tell him some stories about the gods and heroes. Riordan ran through the standards from mythology, then began to invent new tales featuring some of the same characters and introducing a brave boy hero enough like Haley to make things interesting!

Haley begged his father to write the stories down, and in 2005, The Lightning Thief was published to excellent reviews. It was an instant hit with preteens, who loved the concept of a kid much like themselves -- i.e., embroiled in the everyday problems of school, family, and relationships -- embarking on heroic quests, soothing vengeful gods, and battling monsters.

In addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Riordan also writes books for adults, most notably a series of high-octane Tex-Mex thrillers featuring private investigator Jackson "Tres" Navarre, a complicated loner with an offbeat pedigree. (Tres -- pronounced "Trace" -- is a tai chi master with a Ph.D. in medieval literature who turns to detective work when he is unable to find a teaching job!) The first novel in the series, 1997's Big Red Tequila, scooped the Anthony and Shamus Awards, two of the three most prestigious prizes for Mystery & Crime fiction. Riordan completed the trifecta when his sequel, The Widower's Two-Step, won the coveted Edgar Award in 1999.

Between the two series, Riordan remains incredibly busy. For several years, he balanced writing with teaching English to middle school students. Reluctantly, he has left teaching (a career he thoroughly enjoyed) in order to write full-time, but he still harbors hopes that someday he'll return to the classroom. Meanwhile, he makes frequent visits to schools and enjoys meeting young readers on his book tours.

    Fantastic books

I am a 20 year old college student and I happened upon these books by accident and I fully recommend them to everyone, children and adults alike. They are packed with adventure and I may be a nerd for admitting I am 20 and I enjoy them but then again, who cares?!

GREAT SERIES!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT AND LOOK FORWARD TO READING IT AGAIN!!!

Loved it. A great series that ties greek mythology with new fiction. I loved the adventure and the need to prove oneself. The characters are very easy to relate to despite their extraordinary skills. Fun to read and share with others. I highly recommend this series.

Great at 8! Perfect plus educational.

My daughter is 8 years old and is not interested in Harry Potter yet because the characters seem a little too old for her to connect with. However, Percy is 12 years old and still has those funny kid moments that she can connect with and understand. I read it after she finished so we could discuss the characters and monsters which were great because they are all Greek Mythology. We even google searched to find out more background and fun pictures that will serve her later in school. This series is a great treasure and the chest box set made it seem that much
    more special.

    Greek mess up.

This, my fine young feathered friends, was a good series. I have to say though, there were too many books. It went on and on, but it was still likeable none of the less. I would suggest reading them one at a time, and by that I mean getting one book at a time, instead of having the stack tower above you (which happens to me WAAAY to often) in an impending amount of paper.

Percy Jackson and the Other Demigods Are Awesome

I'm only up to book 3, but I'm hooked! The storyline is amazing. I've also learned some things about the gods and greek mythology that I never knew. My only negative feedback is that the books weren't proofread well enough and had little errors where there was either an extra word or a word was missing.

Get to know your Greek mythology in a fun way

Very engaging set of books. Hate to compare, but if you liked H. Potter, you would like Percy too. Pace is quick and vocabulary is similar. Does help you remember the role each god plays as a bonus. Read it before a child did to see if appropriate/inappropriate. Didn't find anything off-putting and passed it along to the 9 year old who loves it and reading quickly. I am glad that there are strong female characters even though lead is a boy. So the boxed set is great for those who know they're going to read them all.

12 year old son enthralled with Percy Jackson series

My son, now 12, started reading this series when he was 10. His grandmother gave him the first book as a gift. I didn't think he'd read it, as he had been reluctant to read long chapter books, preferring instead books like "Diary of A Whimpy Kid", and the like. He not only read this book in record time, but couldn't wait to read the next in the series and when he finished that, quickly went on to the third and fourth. While he waited for the fifth to be released he reread the four books of the series again, then again and again....

Finally the last book came out, we purchased a 1st edition, after reading it, he started over again with the first book. I have now lost count with how many times he has read this series. I purchased the new boxed set as a Christmas gift, as he's worn his first copies out (some were paperbacks). He plans to keep them in perfect condition, rereading and loaning his older copies out to his classmates, who all enjoy the stories as much as he has.

Through my and his teachers urging he has finally moved on to new material. He is very disappointed that the author ended the series. He anxiously awaits the movie release of "The Lightning Thief" and Rick Riordan's next book series, I'm sure he won't be disappointed!
