Overview

Waverly Bryson is a successful businesswoman in her late 20s who almost has it all: a dream job in sports PR, two best friends, and a bar where everybody knows her name. What she doesn’t have is a ring on her finger. And after being ditched at the altar, she’s in no hurry to get one. Besides, plenty of other issues keep her busy, including her wayward father, a new rival at work, and an ever-nagging fear that her life is not turning out as she thought it would . . . or should. To stay sane, Waverly makes a habit of jotting down “Honey Notes,” self-deprecating bits of single-girl humor that she hopes to one day develop into a line of greeting cards.

Can’t face the dating scene after a bad breakup?
Honey, hit the bar, and hit it hard.
Beer goggles are the lonely girl’s Cupid.

As Waverly stumbles back into the dating scene (no stalkers or jean shorts, please), her personal and professional lives threaten to collide. Perfect on Paper reminds listeners that everyone has had a bad date (or twelve), and that everyone needs a best friend to tell them, “Honey, you are not alone.”

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In the first pages of this lively affair, sassy but hapless Waverly is abandoned by too-good-to-be-true fiancé Aaron. Slow to recover, she finds the fallout of her breakup piling up along with other problems: a distant father, a difficult professional situation, and endless dating mishaps. Though helped by two close friends and not a few margaritas, it's Waverly's endearing (sometimes strained) sense of humor that sees her through, encapsulated in the quippy single-girl greeting card series she launches. Even it isn't as glamorous as it seems, the life of a San Francisco yuppie with a job in sports PR makes a vibrant background for Murnane's tale of romantic intrigue and hilarity, and Waverly is likeable enough to sustain the over-long journey. If Murnane relies too heavily on chick lit clichés-the sweet friend and the saucy friend, the slaphappy girls' night out, the heinous date, repeated pratfalls-in-front-of-the-cute-guy-she employs them knowingly, with enough substance to satisfy.

Waverly's fiancé calls off the wedding at the last minute, and she finds her life spiraling downward. Bad dates, a bitchy coworker out for Waverly's job, and her dad's constant problems are starting to wear on her. To keep her head above water, Waverly starts to jot down “Honey Notes,” a pipe dream for a line of funny, self-deprecating greeting cards. Murnane's self-published debut novel, a 2009 National Indie Excellence Award finalist, has been given a boost by Amazon's new imprint, AmazonEncore. This was reissued in February but would make the perfect addition to any summer must-read list. VERDICT Readers looking for humorous chick lit will find plenty of laughs here.

    I'm ready for the sequel!

Waverly Bryson is newly single again. Her fiance left her at the altar, almost. Two weeks before their wedding he decided to call it off. "I don't think I love you anymore." Ouch. And he did it while she was trying on her wedding gown. Her "perfect" life came crashing down. After a year of social hibernation Waverly is trying to regain her footing in the dating world. Her supportive friends are trying to help but it never seems to work out right. It's one bad date after another. Her job in sports PR in San Francisco is not the career of her dreams. She has a new idea for her own line of greeting cards but could it work? Her family life is strained as well. The only time she hears from her father is when he needs money. Since he gave up his dream of being a baseball player to raise his only child after her mother died she can't escape the guilt. Or his open hand. To top it off, Aaron her ex, is getting married to a partner at his firm. And it's only been a year!

Chick lit fans will especially adore this book as I did. The characters were so interesting, I wanted to hang out with her friends and slap her dates. While Waverly is attempting to reorganize her life and accomplish her dreams she has to overcome her obstacles and fortunately all of this happens in a humorous way. When I laughed out loud I was hooked. And I am ready for the sequel!

"Perfect" book to curl up and read in your favorite chair!

    Book synopsis:
Anything can look perfect¿on paper

When her fiancé calls off their wedding at the last minute, Waverly Bryson wonders if her life will ever turn out the way she thought it would¿or should. Her high-powered job in sports PR? Not

so perfect. Her relationship with her dad? Far from it. Her perfect marriage? Enough said.

Perfect on Paper is a humorous tale of Waverly¿s efforts to cobble the pieces of a broken yesterday into a brand new tomorrow. What does the future have in store for her? Will she finally find what she¿s looking for?

Her dates? Cringe-inducing at times, definitely entertaining

Her friends? Often amused, definitely supportive

Her new crush? Possibly intrigued, definitely a catch

The results? Hardly perfect, definitely just right
****
Perfect on Paper is a story that reflects how a single woman can live a klumzy, chaotic and rollercoaster life, but still come out on top. Waverly Bryson is the funny, smart, girl next door that everyone wants to be around, but she doesn't realize it herself. She wades through her life trying to live the way she thinks it 'should' be and not the way 'she' wants it to be. This book has total chick lit all over it, but I loved it!! Maria Murnane's first book had me laughing out loud so much, my dog kept looking at me like something must be wrong! One 'story' Waverly's friend Andie tells around beer and pizza, just had me laughing all evening!! The "Honey" greeting card idea , that was used at the beginning of each chapter and throughout the book, was a creative idea that made you go 'oh yeah' each time you read one. Here are just 2 examples:

They say laughter is the best medicine? (front)
Honey, toss it in with girlfriends and beer, and you've found the fountain of youth. (inside)

Ever wonder why the new girl at work seems to hate you so much? (front)
Honey, think back to the angst of the high-school lunchroom. Then offer her a seat at your table. (inside)

From Waverly to her girlfriends, co-workers and men she dated, all of these characters are colorfully written in making a well rounded story. If you want to smile until your face hurts or laugh until you cry, then this is the book to get. So go buy a copy, get some hot chocolate and curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy the life of Waverly Bryson...you won't be disappointed.

    Great new author....

Wow, I have to say this is the best book in this genre that I have read in a long time!!!! The honey notes included within are definitely laugh out loud funny, enough so that I picked up the phone a couple times to read them to my best friend. I truly enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book, it was light, fluffy and so enjoyable!! :) Waverly is such a fun character and reading about what she was going to get into next was a riot. A great book, Ms. Murnane is definitely a new author to keep your eyes on, I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!!! :) 5/5

    Delightful fun read

Maria Murnane¿s was very generous and kind in sending me a copy of her new book, Perfect on Paper. Thank you so much Maria, for such a fun read!

Everything is perfect! He¿s handsome, rich, smart and comes from a very impressive family. What more could a girl want? For one thing, for the wedding to actually happen, not for him to back out just 2 weeks before the fairy-tale day. I was drawn in immediately with the contrasts between Waverly and her fiance. This was a good way to set up the scenario and it definitely worked.

With a broken engagement behind her and a broken heart to be mended, Waverly Bryson tries to retreat from the land of the dating until her two best friends McKenna and Andie try to get her out of her funk. This effort involves blind dates, yuk! Some are just plain horrible while some are barely tolerable. Some of these scenarios will have you laughing out loud. Murnane shows her incredible sense of humor through out the entire book. At one gathering, Waverly looks over the crowd and says, ¿just like straight off the rack at Nerds R Us.¿ There is plenty more where that came from.

I liked the way Murnane builds up Waverly¿s character. She has a conflict in her feelings with her father and the emotion in this shows clearly. The dialogue between Waverly and her two best friends is always witty, while still being caring. I found it very plausible with only one quibble. Do almost thirty year olds say they would like to meet ¿cute boys¿? I would think by that age they would be looking for ¿hot men¿. But this is only a small annoyance because over all the book is very good.

Murnane creates a character you want to root for as this book made me smile, laugh and at times groan out loud. Waverly learns to discover her true inner self and comes to the realization that she needs to do what makes her happy, not what others think should make her happy. Out of what seemed like the end of her world in the beginning, came a lot of good for the future. Perfect on Paper is perfect for those who like humor and chick lit with some real substance to it. I give it 4 ½ *****
