Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Prize-winning cake decorator Deacon is a prolific writer who has published a wide variety of books on cakes (e.g., Fabulous Party Cakes and Cupcakes; Carol Deacon's Little Book of Easy Children's Cakes). Cooks wishing to make a foray into the kitchen to try their hand at the art may wish to pick up this title, as it contains over 70 designs of novelty cakes to make and decorate for any occasion. Most of the projects will delight children, and they include easy-to-follow instructions and several photographs to help readers along the way. Several cake and frosting recipes are featured, along with techniques and materials. The cakes in this volume are mostly created using fondant frosting. Depending on your collection, this may be a practical, well-constructed addition to your baking section. [For serious fondant enthusiasts, consider Helen Penman's recent Fondant Modeling for Cake Decorators.—Ed.]

Meet the Author

Carol Deacon began cake decorating by accident when a friend asked her to make a birthday cake. The idea of combining creativity with model making and something that also tasted great really appealed to her. Early designs won her gold medals in competitions and even a car in an icing competition run by a food magazine. Carol left her then job in advertising and worked for a year at Jane Asher's cake shop in Chelsea, London. Carol then went freelance and as well as running a succesful wedding cake business and writing books, Carol has designed and written for many food and cake magazines and has demonstrated her edible artistic skills in the UK, abroad and on TV. Carol has just begun running classes. If you are interested, you can find details on Amazon's Carol Deacon Page under "events".
