Quick (aka Jayne Ann Krentz) delivers her reliable blend of sex and suspense in her latest Arcane Society novel. In Victorian London, spinster botanist and psychic Lucinda Bromley meets her match in Caleb Jones, a member of the Arcane Society and descendant of an alchemist family that makes him "the stuff of myth and legend." Together, this paranormal pair of snoops sets out to track down a thief who made off with a dangerous plant implicated in the death of a wealthy lord, but wind up uncovering a sinister secret order. Quick invents two dazzling 19th-century sleuths who combine paranormal prowess and raw sexual heat. But if they excel at fooling Mother Nature, it's their all too human nature that brings this uncommon Victorian duo to life. (Apr.)

Possessing the ability to sense the presence of poison, botanist Lucinda Bromley is often called in by local authorities for her expert opinion. Unfortunately, some think she had a hand in poisoning her fiancé. Then a nobleman is killed with poison that could only have been made with a rare fern that had been stolen from her conservatory. Together with fellow Arcane Society member Caleb Jones, Lucinda sets out to unmask the real killer. What she doesn't expect is to fall for her partner in detection. Seductiveness and clever plotting combine with Quick's classic zingy wit to produce a funny, fast-paced romp that will please readers. Another winner in the popular Arcane Society series for Seattle area-based Quick (The Third Circle). [See Prepub Alert, LJ12/08.]

I loved the banter between Lucinda and Caleb. From the start what seemed like oil and water was really the bond at work. Lucy is so strong willed yet kind, intelligent and a botanical talent. Caleb is steadfast, determined yet gentle in his own way, and is a conspiracy talent. The job she hires him for soon turns out to be tied to a rather large case he's been working on for the newly formed agency - later to be known by a much more famous name. I was tickled to find out the origins of J&J. Romance, humor, action, murder, drama, an organization within another, shocking twists, this was a real page turner. I also got a kick out of the supporting characters, mainly her cousin and Caleb's new hire. As usual, Quick aka Krentz aka Castle, knocks it out of the park. Another great addition to the Arcane Series.

The Perfect Poison, sixth in the Arcane Series by Amanda Quick, is a Victorian Era mystery whose heroine's talent for detecting poisons has her life always one step away from ruin or suspicion. Lucinda Bromley is another of Amanda Quick's unusual women who are more than a match for the members of the Arcane Society. The mystery that starts with the theft of a rare plant and takes the reader on a botanical adventure keeps you guessing right up to the end.

Typical of the Arcane series, with a good mix of drama, romance and suspense. Not as gripping as some of the others in the series, however, but helpful in producing a larger picture of the Arcane society in general. Enjoyable to read.
