Overview

They call him Lord Heartless for good reason. Brandon Pellidore, Marquess of Hartley, knows that a slip of his tongue or the least sign of emotion, and the trustees overseeing his fortune will brand him as mad as his grandmother and father before him. But a runaway beauty with a sparkle in her eye may prove his undoing. Celia Rider is determined to discover why her own fortune has gone missing, and her search leads her to Brandon's door. As secrets and dangers mount, can Celia convince Brandon to remove his mask so that they can share a love that is nothing short of perfection? Sweet Regency romance; kisses only.

"In her latest historical Regency, Scott beautifully builds a quiet sense of menance and dangerous intrigue and then adds wonderfully complex characters and witty writing to create an exceptionally memorable romance." -- Booklist

"Appealing, intelligent protagonists, nicely defined if not always likeable secondary characters, and the darker elements of greed, murder, and revenge combine with charming dialog, well-done descriptions, and solid prose to produce a historical that shouldn't disappoint." -- Library Journal

5 stars. "An incredible romance filled with danger, excitement, and betrayal. Read this! Can I make it any clearer?" -- The Huntress Reviews

"Regina Scott is a master storyteller. Once I started reading, I could not stop. She has crafted a wonderful tale full of romance and suspense. One word truly sums it up--perfection." -- Affaire de Coeur

"How did you manage to evade your duties?" As the carriage set off, he crossed one booted leg over the other and clasped it with both large hands.

She felt her smile widen, remembering. "My brother is riding with a groom. He is in alt, and my stepmother grudgingly allowed me a few moments to myself."

"Then you will not mind taking extra time in our meeting."

She cocked her head. "No. Why?"

"I intend to learn the truth of your fortune, as I said."

She laughed. "If you can do that, I will think you possessed of magical powers, Lord Oberon."

He raised a brow. "You see me as a fairy?"

Her laugh bubbled up again, but somehow she thought he liked the sound. Perhaps it was the smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Have you ever read Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream?" she asked. "Puck you may call a fairy. Oberon is definitely something more."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Indeed. Arrogant, demanding, controlling."

"If the shoe fits, my lord."

"Only too well, Miss Rider. And do I take it you see yourself as Titania, queen of the fairies?"

She shook her head. "And fall in love with a donkey? No, thank you."

"A shame," he replied with a decided twinkle in his eye. "I was growing rather fond of your fiancé."

Celia burst into laughter and was rewarded to see the smile spread on his face. It was like the sun coming out after a storm.

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese.

She and her husband of nearly 25 years reside in southeast Washington State with their overactive Irish terrier. Regina Scott is a decent fencer; owns a historical costume collection that takes up over a third of her large closet; and is an active member of the Church of the Nazarene. How could not suspect foul play in regards to his father, grandfather, and him, I have no idea... but good story nonetheless.

Funny moments, predicted ending, but worth it.

Brandon Pellidore, Marquess of Hartley, had to be careful. His family line was reported to have insanity. All who died due to it did so by age thirty. Therefore, Brandon would only receive his inheritance if he lived until age thirty without showing any of the insanity symptoms. Thirty was only a couple months away. Because Brandon was so careful and stand-offish around others, the Ton gave him the title 'Lord Heartless'. It gave Brandon the reputation he preferred. Then he met Celia Rider. ............... Celia was drawn to Brandon, even though she was promised to another. She was able to see behind his mask. Her title for him was 'Lord Oberon'. Brandon learned that Celia had been informed that her late father had left her penniless. Knowing it to be untrue, Celia was on a quest to locate her missing inheritance and find the thief. Brandon insisted on helping. Their investigation began to make someone nervous enough to attempt murder. ............... ***** An incredible romance filled with danger, excitement, and betrayal. There is much more going on than my synopsis reveals between the main hero and heroine. In addition, there are several secondary characters that captured my attention from the start. Tantalizing sub-plots keep the story moving along at a fast pace. Read this! Can I make it any clearer? *****
