School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-Three additional series entries. Performing Dogs introduces famous canine performers and their trainers, from Pete the Pup in the ``Our Gang'' comedies to Beasley from the movie Turner and Hooch. The jobs these dogs do in movies, on TV, at circuses, and in advertising are mentioned. An appendix of easy tricks to teach a pet is also included. Ranch and Farm Dogs discusses the dogs that work as herders and guards. Traditional breeds used for each job and their training are discussed. Border collies, Welsh corgis, and sheepdogs are among the breeds highlighted. Search and Rescue Dogs describes the characteristics that these animals must have and the important functions they perform in wilderness, snow, water, and disaster rescues. All three books are readable, containing a mixture of facts and personal narratives. Good-quality black-and-white and full-color photographs appear throughout.-Carol Kolb Phillips, The Library, East Brunswick, NJ
