This has to be the best recording of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater around. Christopher Hogwood's academic interpretation of the score means we are mercifully spared the excessive ornamentation and warbling that plagues other recordings. Emma Kirkby is the perfect soprano for this music - ethereal and sacred without ever being overwhelming. Her voice is pure, diction superb, and tone assured, and there is no sign of any operatic excess. James Bowman is splendid as usual and brings out the plaintive aspects of the piece without descending into pathos. This is not usually not the case with recordings that use female altos. This is most definitely a 'desert island disc' - music by which to meet your Creator! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
