Overview

Due to good nutrition, better health, and other factors, girls these days really do grow up faster than they used to. The average girl begins to develop between the ages of eight and ten, with menstruation starting two to three years later. Unfortunately the subject remains a difficult one for many parents to broach. Geared toward parents and their daughters, this Spanish-language edition of Period — the best-selling English language version — offers a refreshingly positive perspective on puberty and menstruation, without sex education. Thoroughly revised and updated, Periodo teaches girls a healthy attitude toward their bodies. Complete with clear illustrations and a parent’s guide, it covers the subject in a thoughtful and thorough manner.

Gr 4 Up-A factual and easy-to-understand book about puberty and menstruation. The authors interviewed several women and asked them to recall their feelings about the changes in their bodies and their experiences during the first year of menstruation. The first chapter introduces the body changes that girls go through to become young women. Diagrams depict the sexual organs and are labeled with scientific terminology. These diagrams are tastefully done, and parents should not find the illustrations objectionable. This is not a sex education book, but it does discuss the menstrual cycle in a culturally acceptable manner. Other chapters discuss feminine hygiene products, mood swings, and other physical changes, along with a thorough explanation of the dreaded pelvic exam. This is an appropriate book to include in school and public libraries, but it would also make a great resource for the home or for school counselors and nurses.
