Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Margaret A Holder, PhD (University of North Florida Brooks College of Health)
Description: This book provides the approved standards, recommended practices, and guidance statements for perioperative nursing practice from the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). These documents examine the scope of professional responsibility for perioperative nursing and contain information essential not only for the delivery of safe perioperative patient care, but also for a safe work environment. This is an update of the 2009 edition.
Purpose: Published periodically, the book states the most recent standards defining the scope, responsibilities, and dimensions of perioperative nursing practice. It also provides the most recent recommended practices and guidelines addressing specific diagnoses or clinical conditions in this type of practice. These standards and guidelines are the foundation of perioperative nursing practice and will assist nurses in making evidence-based care decisions.
Audience: The primary audience is nurses and administrators who are involved in practices where surgical and invasive procedures are performed. The authors are all members of AORN and the documents are from the AORN Recommended Practices Committee and approved by the AORN Board of Directors.
Features: The book is divided into three main sections. The first outlines the standards of perioperative nursing practice. Last revised in 2009, this section contains the latest authoritative statements that describe RN responsibilities for safe perioperative nursing practice. Section two provides comprehensive recommended practice standards for perioperative nursing care. Two new standards are DVT prevention and medication safety, and there is a significant revision of healthcare information management. The third section includes the AORN guidelines and guidance statements. The guidelines define a minimum set of services and actions while the guidance statements provide readers with assistance in developing organization-specific processes. The book also includes a policy and procedure template and an updated index of terms and concepts.
Assessment: This is the essential guide for nurses and administrators providing surgical or invasive procedure care to patients. Written by the experts, it is a necessary component of the library of anyone in perioperative nursing practice. This update includes AORN-approved revisions of practices and guidelines from as early as 2003 to 2011.
