Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Christopher Betz, Pharm.D.(Sullivan University College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is a set of laminated cards on a ring with over 30 references such as equations, algorithms, schedules, and drug interactions designed for quick access by practicing and student pharmacists. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: It is intended to collate key clinical information in a concise, easily accessible compendium. Although there is a clear need for such a pocket guide for student pharmacists, most practicing pharmacists should know this information.
Audience: As the largest pharmacist association in the U.S. representing over 60,000 members, APhA is uniquely qualified to develop this reference for pharmacists and student pharmacists.
Features: This is a concise, easily accessible, and color-coded reference separated into several sections containing information on nonprescription pediatric dosages, warfarin dosing, normal lab values, national clinical guidelines, target drug concentrations, patient counseling, and patient assessment. Much of the information is directly from national guidelines. However, some of the information, particularly related to vancomycin and aminoglycoside dosing, is already out of date at the time of publication.
Assessment: Much of the information contained on these cards should be committed to memory by practicing pharmacists. Therefore, it may be useful for pharmacy students, but would offer little to practicing pharmacists.
