Description: This guide for patients afflicted with peripheral neuropathy provides information about its diagnosis and management and provides patients' anecdotes that describe their personal experiences with the disorder.
Purpose: This is intended to enable patients with peripheral neuropathy to better understand the causes of and treatment for the disease. The book is also relevant for those who know people affected by the disorder. I frequently encounter patients who do not know anything about peripheral neuropathy and this is a tremendous resource to inform and empower these patients.
Audience: This book is written for patients with neuropathy and their families and friends. It is also a good resource for medical students and residents who are studying peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Latov is a world-renowned expert on the topic.
Features: This book is arranged in a logical fashion with chapters devoted to the various aspects of peripheral neuropathy. It starts with a basic neuroanatomy primer which is followed by information on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of the disorder. It ends with patients' personal stories. Key points are nicely highlighted which are essentially the take-home messages. Chapter 4 has a nice section in which various medical terms are defined so that lay readers understand their meaning. Chapter 5 on the causes of peripheral neuropathy is comprehensive and includes an up-to-date chart of the different types of hereditary neuropathies. Patients will appreciate the stories and experience of others with peripheral neuropathy. One of the only shortcomings of this book is the lack of illustrations, which would have been particularly helpful for the anatomy section. Photographs of patients with hereditary neuropathy would also help readers, who might have a difficult time visualizing stork legs and pes cavus.
Assessment: This book is easy to read and is appropriate for the lay reader. It is comprehensive and a good resource for the patient with peripheral neuropathy. I would encourage my patients with peripheral neuropathy to read this book.
