Children's Literature - Leona Illig
The 2009 top cat in America, the Persian, is the subject of this entertaining and informative book, part of the "Cat-ographics" series. After a short introduction to the champion, Gorilla, and his owners, the book turns to the history of the breed. Persians are among the oldest cat breeds, and are believed to have been brought from Persia to Europe by the Italian explorer, Pietro della Valle. Their fascinating history continued in England, where Queen Victoria kept two as pets. The book describes the evolution of the cats over time: originally big and with large muzzles, Persians today are smaller and have a distinctive round, flat, pushed-in face. The author takes care to point out the differences between Persians and other cats, with their long coats and their two layers of fur. She also emphasizes that because of their distinctive coats, Persians need extra grooming and attention. Health problems are also described: abnormal teeth are sometimes found in individuals, and almost 40 percent of Persians have kidney disease. Information about kitten and adult behaviors, and the cat's particular personality traits, is also provided. The photographs are excellent and complement the text well. The end of the book features a page-length summary of the basic information, a glossary, an index, a bibliography, a list of books for further reading, and a list of on-line references. Laura Matthews, a breeder of Persian and exotic shorthair cats, is listed as a consultant. This book serves as an excellent reference for readers wishing to learn about the breed and its place in history. Reviewer: Leona Illig
