In this study, Giardetti offers a dialogical investigation of those works of Jane Austen that are set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. The text focuses on the ways in which Austen inverts commonly held definitions of masks, mirrors, and mirages to explore the complex nature of personal and societal transformation. The novels are also compared and contrasted with the writings of French authors (such as Molière and Rousseau) who influenced the French Revolutionaries.
