Persuasive Speech: Public Speaking Tips and the Art of Public Speaking

“In the teaching of speech, the tendency has too often been to consider the physical delivery as an aspect quite apart from the content of the speech itself. The tendency becomes so pronounced, at times, that one would think the two aspects were mutually exclusive. However, more and more, contemporary teachers of speech are considering the entire speech performance as a whole. Both what is said and how it is said are of importance, and of equal importance. The judicious blending of these two components into one basic unit has been done very skillfully in this book by Dr. LeRoy Brown. Dr. Brown for a number of years was a successful dramatist, and, from this training and experience, knows first hand the value of physical delivery in platform and stage performance. Furthermore, he has taught the speech arts on both the secondary and the college level for many years. He has also had considerable experience in teaching adults to speak successfully in public. His background, both practical and theoretical, is sufficient to thoroughly acquaint him with the needs of the speech student.

This book is a rather unusual one in the field of speech in that it reads easily. This, I think, is a good recommendation. While it contains the necessary fundamentals for a textbook, it also has sufficient humor and human interest to make it appealing to the reader. A casual look at the chapter titles is sufficient to evoke interest even from the most apathetic student. The use of direct conversation in many of the examples adds vividness and life.

The speech student will find this book to be a practical text rather than a pedagogical treatise on theory. The information herein contained is pragmatic and has been proven practical through usage. The layman who does not have the opportunity to enroll in a formal speech class will find this book an invaluable help for his own speech needs. It is so simply written and so completely clarified that it can easily be understood and applied without the aid of an instructor. The book fulfills a felt need in the teaching of speech fundamentals.”
