Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf governs a critical state in the worldwide war on terror. Before becoming president, Musharraf had spent his entire career in the Pakistani army. He helped train Afghani guerrilla forces to overthrow the Soviet regime and was also involved in leading Pakistani troops against Indian forces as part of the continuing struggle between the two nations over the disputed Kashmir area. During his tenure as president, the Pakistani economy has grown. Nevertheless, Musharraf has been forced to contend with political groups who have not supported his authoritarian government. Pervez Musharraf keenly examines the life and career of this leader, whose decisions are capable of influencing some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
This book is part of the excellent "Modern World Leaders" series. Musharraf is a major contemporary leader of Pakistan, a country whose politics we follow to learn how their crises, decisions, violence and intrigue may affect not only Pakistan but other countries in today's world. After a thoughtful forward by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., entitled "On Leadership" the book begins in Musharraf's plane as it approached the Karachi Pakistan Airport in October of 1999. It is a fateful moment for Pakistan because when the plane landed, Musharraff had just become the new leader of his country. Modern Pakistan, including its political situation and problems, is described in succeeding chapters. Musharraf's manner of dealing with his country's issues, as well as with other leaders who wanted to share power with him makes for interesting reading. The press photographs feature important figures and critical events which have taken place in Pakistan. Information presented is up-to-date and offers students a look into this country which has been so often featured in current news of the world. The last chapter "The Future of Pakistan" relates political and economic struggles which the government has had, including the great earthquake and relief efforts to help the people. The war on terrorism is described without offering any solutions to this, or other problems. As the author suggests, the future role of Musharraf's leadership will depend on how effective he can remain to direct Pakistan's future. A chronology, a short bibliography and a list of further reading sources are listed at the end of the book, as are picture credits and an index. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy
