Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Sharks that weigh as much as a bus, birds too heavy to fly, snakes that can only be lifted when several people share the load, these animals tip the scales as the heaviest; some are the opposite. On the other side, animals that would never tip the scale are fish that weigh as little as a golf ball, birds weighing less than a nickel that flit from flower to flower and snakes that do not need to weigh more than a few pounds because their bite is so deadly. This book teaches opposites, specifically the concept of heavy versus light. Fantastic photos capture the attention of the reader and skillfully position the target to demonstrate the otherwise unbelievable size. The book ends with an engaging fact page that connects readers with the animals around them, some so small and light that they can evade you in a blink of an eye, others so large and heavy that they are awfully hard to miss. PreS-Gr 2–These bilingual titles are highly effective due to the combination of full-color photographs and simple sentences that help listeners and beginning readers understand the texts and concepts introduced through animal opposites. The photographs contribute to the books’ appeal. Fascinating Did You Know?/Sabías que? sections provide fun facts about key animal traits to entice readers into further learning. Librarians, teachers, or caregivers can attract reluctant, early, or emergent readers with these offerings.–Eric Gómez, Broward County African-American Research Library, Fort Lauderdale, FL
