Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maria E. Gentle
Poor Rosa is bored, but her grandmother is too busy making tortillas to sell at the Mercado. Rosa tries to get Esperanza, the donkey, to play with her, but Esperanza will not budge, so Rosa goes to the beach. She sits on a rock and watches the pelicans play. The she spots a little fish riding the waves. Pescadito eventually ends up on Rosa's skirt. Now she has something to play with. She takes the little fish home where she starts making her favorite dishes for Pescadito to eat. Eventually Pescadito becomes Pescadote! What is Rosa to do? A beautifully illustrated story in brightly subdued watercolors conveys the feeling of the seaside. Although the story could be set anywhere, we know it is Mexico by the clothing and especially by the icon of the Virgen of Guadalupe drawn on a rock. Children will find Pescadito delightful not only at story time but also as a quiet reading with a caregiver. The language flows easily. The size of the book and the quality of the glossy paper make for a pretty package.
