Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Andy and his pet goldfish are having a Halloween party and need costumes. They move through various choices but the fact that Nibbles can't talk complicates matters. Ultimately, Andy does all of the brainstorming and the fish uses creative nonverbal methods to add her two cents. Throw in the bow on the top of her head and how she deadpans her displeasure, and Nibbles steals the show. Byrne's vibrant cartoon drawings offer gentle humor to Hooks's giggle-worthy story. Basic vocabulary combined with dialogue and slightly more complex sentence structures will help stretch beginning readers while keeping them engaged with the familiar. An excellent addition to most collections.—Sarah Townsend, Norfolk Public Library, VA

Andy has a dilemma. He is having a Halloween costume party for his friends in the Pet Club and their pets. His problem is deciding what is the best costume for his fish Nibbles. Clever Andy gets paper, glue, and scissors as he imagines all the creations he can make. For her part Nibbles is not happy with the idea of being a lion or a spider. After watching his fish swim sadly in her bowl, Andy has a moment of brilliance. That evening, as the guests and pets arrive cleverly costumed, Andy and Nibbles make their entrance dressed as...sharks! Perfect. For the newly independent reader this is an excellent choice. With slightly longer sentences, a more evolved vocabulary, and a suspenseful tale the reader will flex and stretch his reading muscle. Cartoon illustrations add to the fun. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
