Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker
Young pet lovers will enjoy this book, which gives step-by-step instructions for creating everything from tasty pet treats to fashionable pet clothing. The tutorials are written simply, allowing them to be easily understood, and are accompanied by black-and-white illustrations that highlight each step of the crafting process. Bright photos of the finished products (often modeled by adorable critters) are also included. Most of the materials for each pet-friendly project are readily available at crafting stores, but some materials will not require a trip to the store at all, since they can be gathered from around the house. Templates for several of the projects are located at the back of the book along with a "Pet Lover's Agreement"—a contract that outlines the importance of caring for a pet's needs, particularly when those needs can be satisfied by crafting. Readers should be aware that while there are many projects in this book, most are for dogs, cats, birds, and gerbils. However, a child with a great imagination could modify any number of these projects for other animals. Reviewer: Kim Harris Thacker

Gr 2–5—Each of these attractive books offers more than 15 original craft ideas. Green suggests projects that encourage young artists to display their environmentalism. Some of the items are created from recycled goods, while others are made from new materials but sport environmental slogans. Rockin' shows a variety of creative ways to decorate rocks. Many of the crafts in Pet are intended for animals (some dogs might be able to chew right through the iPet, a stuffed iPod look-alike). Readers and their parents will have to assess the safety of the crafts as they have no stated ASPCA approval. The projects have clear step-by-step instructions that are accompanied by helpful illustrations and color photos of the finished projects. All the materials required are readily available at craft stores, and the projects are of appropriate difficulty level for the target audience.

"The Art of Drawing" series of manuals introduces art students to the tools and materials artists use for drawing; this volume focuses specifically on pencils but also references digital pens and tablets. Numerous pages are devoted to understanding drawing basics like hatching and crosshatching with numerous examples of combinations of lines for shading and creating textures. The instructions for drawing the characters are organized by genre of fantasy; science fiction, horror and adventure. Individual creatures are drawn in seven or nine steps with the final image in full color. Great attention is given to texture and detail in these drawings. Science fiction creatures include an android, an alien lord and a cyborg. Horror characters include Frankenstein's monster, a vampire and a hellhound. The adventure characters drawn are an evil sorcerer, a dragon slayer, a druid and a jester among others. These books are written for adults with especially small type but can easily be used by older kids who only need to follow the steps of the illustrations to develop their drawing skills. Parental discretion for young children advised based on some of the subject matter.
