Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
Animals aren't always the most cooperative of creatures when it comes to photography, and Susan Ley advises readers on how to make the most out of the dilemma. This book is a strongly recommended pick for community, library and photography collections.
Library Journal
Pets are a common subject for amateur photographers, but getting a decent shot of your wiggly Weimaraner, crotchety cat, or fast-moving mutt can be tricky. In this guide, Ley, a professional photographer with decades of experience specializing in animal photography, offers her best tips and advice for photographing pets. Beginning photographers may find the humorous, breezy writing style encouraging, while more experienced photographers will appreciate the simplicity of the animal-specific technical pointers.

Meet the Author

A professional animal photographer for over 35 years, Susan Ley began her career on a Kentucky llama farm when she picked up a camera and resolved to capture her unique animals on film. "Back then, there weren't any books on how to photograph domestic animals," Susan says, "so I designed a course and taught myself. It was lots of fun and very creative. I couldn't wait to get back my proofs to see what I was accomplishing. Before long I was actually taking some pretty good images!"

Excited with her success, she began sending photographs to magazines and calendar companies. The editors and art directors scooped them up and requested more. "Seeing my photographs in print was addictive," she says, and her career was on its way.

She wrote and photographed Llamas; Woolly, Winsome and Wonderful, signed with the prestigious stock photo agency, Animals Animals/Earth Scenes, developed a series of "how to" seminars on animal photography and sold countless articles and photographs to magazine, book, and calendar companies.

This book is the fulfillment of her dream to help amateur photographers learn from her years of experience in the field of animal photography. "Pets give us such joy, so it's only natural to want to savor the wonderful moments we've shared with them," she says. "That's the magic of photography—to take you to a place you've been before and experience the happy feelings over and over again.

"I've kept the writing light and fun because photography is a learned skill, so as you get better, you both fail and succeed. The trick to getting it right is to have practical step-by-step information. I'm confident this book gives amateur photographers all the tools they need for great images."

Susan lives in Key Largo, Florida where she enjoys the turquoise waters with her family and her Irish terrier, Morgan. She is currently working on a video adaptation of the book.
