Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The favorite shirt of Pete the Cat is now missing a button. Does he panic? Does he cry? Of course not. He just adds another verse to his groovy button songs and invites little readers to join in. A charming interactive button book by a talented team.

— Lisa Dugan

Publishers Weekly
In his fourth picture book, Pete the Cat loves (and sings about) the buttons on his yellow shirt, but when they pop off one by one, he doesn’t freak out: “Did Pete cry? Goodness, no! Buttons come and buttons go.” In bold, primary colors, the number of buttons remaining on the shirt appears at left, both as a numeral and written out, and the diminishing buttons are represented in basic equations (3-1=2). Even after all his buttons are gone, Pete takes it as a cue to go surfing. Readers who need a reminder not to sweat the small stuff will find a model of unflappability in Pete. Ages 3–7. (May)
Kirkus Reviews
In his third outing Pete the Cat follows the pattern of his previous appearances: Despite repeated wardrobe malfunctions, he maintains his upbeat attitude and bouncy charm. This time around the focus is on the buttons on Pete's favorite shirt, instead of his shoes, and there's even a bit of math involved. Still, for readers who have met Pete previously there's not much here that's new. Pete moves from his cozy chair to a skateboard to the street outside to a surfboard on top of an old-style Volkswagen Beetle. In each spot, for no apparent reason, one button pops off. The repeated refrain asks "Did Pete cry?" and answers "Goodness, no! Buttons come and buttons go." As a song it's likely perky, but read aloud, the text can seem tedious and overlong. Still, the brightly colored, childlike paintings and playful typography should keep kids' attention, and some will also enjoy identifying the large numerals as they count backwards from four to zero. A final twist finds Pete admiring his bellybutton, which will always be with him unlike the "stuff" that "will come and…go," offering the option of a mildly anti-consumerist message for parents who choose to emphasize it. Fans will definitely want to visit the publisher's website to check out the extras, while newcomers will either do the same or let Pete go, depending on their taste. (Picture book. 3-7)
Children's Literature
Pete is sporting his favorite, yellow shirt with four colorful buttons and he sings a song about those four buttons. Unfortunately, one of the buttons pops off and Pete is left with three. Pete, being a cool cat, is not upset by the lost button and he sings a song about three buttons. Pete continues to lose a button until there are no buttons left on his shirt. He continues to keep his cool and sings his song for a cute twist that will have children giggling and laughing. The illustrations are bold, bright, and colorful. The end pages have pictures of buttons against a blue background. Children will be able to see important details in the story like the shirt, buttons, and numbers. Young children will enjoy chanting or singing Pete's buttons song. Check out the other stories featuring Pete the Cat along with the author and illustrator websites. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
School Library Journal
K-Gr 1—Pete loves his special shirt so much that he just has to sing about it all the time: "My buttons, my buttons,/my four groovy buttons. My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons." It's not one of those songs that will repeat itself in children's heads throughout the day. In fact, it is boring. And, it is a large part of the text. As each button pops off, the song changes to adjust to the number left. The question is asked, "Did Pete cry?/Goodness, no./Buttons come and buttons go." The text is slim and repetitive, and the math problems are very simplistic. The text just does not hold readers' interest, but the illustrations are charming and humorous, with a hint of Chris Raschka's pen and gouache style. The blue-black cat has huge eyes and a deadpan expression as he sits on a skateboard, or a surfboard, while buttons fall off his shirt. No matter what, he maintains a reason to sing. When all the buttons are gone, he remembers he still has a button to sing about: his belly button. Not a first choice.—Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Union, Washington & Waldoboro, ME

I love this book as much as the first Pete the Cat book! This book is wonderful for 3 - 7 year olds. They get it! I do story times at a public library and this is one of my favorite new books. I make a big deal of the button boinging off, and the ending always gets a big laugh. I LOVE Pete!! I know chidlrens books and I know children. This is a good, funny book, with a touch of math.

    Cute cute cute

This is a very cute book! This is a great book for young children. And to you who said that this book sends the wrong message....this book is for YOUNG children. No teenager who has a car and an ipad would live their life according to this book. This is a about a cat losing buttons. A button can be easily replaced. I LOVE PETE THE CAT BOOKS!! I read them all the time to my preschool class.

Bought this for my 2 yr daughter on my nook after a great reading by Mr Eric at our local library! She already had Pete the Cat: I love my white shoes and loves to sing/hum this around the house, and after storytime with Mr Eric, she started grooving about Pete's buttons so we went ahead and bought this one as well. Thnx to the library for introducing us to the books and the fun story of Pete the Cat! All good is her new phrase of the week/month!

Okay speedcat you got the wrong message from this book. It is meant for young children who are learning to control their emotions and not cry and throw tantrums over small things that don't go there way in life. My preschool class loves this book and all the others in the series. They love the repetitive versus and sing along! I wish there were more books like this that engage the children in the story.

Not as good as I'd hoped

I was hoping for a cute story about a cat and his buttons. After reading it, I think it actually sends a negative message. Instead of looking for something you've lost, and taking care of your belongings, the message it sends is that it is okay to lose something and let it go. I do not think this is a good message to send. Just imagine this, "hey mom, dad, I lost that $10,000 car and $800 iPad you got me, but that is okay, Pete the cat lost his buttons and said it is okay to lose stuff." The production of the story though is top notch, but I was not impressed with the story itself and its message. I will not give this to any children I know.

We love all the Pete the Cat books! I had never heard of them until they were introduced to my son's preschool class by one of the teachers. Now we own them all except for the Christmas one (we'll buy that one later on). Great story/morals and the illustrations are pretty cute!

My 4 year old grandson loves to read and re-read all the Pete the Cat books. The Nook Read to Me eBook is a favorite. Pete has a great attitude and we always ask what would Pete do when we run into an upsetting situation.

    GROOVY

My little girl loves Pete the cat and my husband and i always enjoy reading it with her. I disagree with the previous post that this book encourages children to be irresponsible. It is fun, enjoyable and even throws in a little math. Pete the cat will always be groovy in our eyes!
