Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In his previous outing, blue cat Pete proved his ability to roll with the punches when his white sneakers were accidentally stained red. Sporting the red treads for the first day of school (they match his electric guitar), Pete is again unflappable. "Pete has never been to the library before! Does Pete worry? Goodness, no! He finds his favorite book and sings his song." School setting aside, little differentiates this book from its predecessor. There's humor to be found in the deadpan expressions of Pete and his fellow cats as he sits with friends in the lunchroom, plays at recess, and solves math problems on the board. But whether the simple refrain and Pete's blasé attitude actually assuage anxious schoolgoers is another story. Pete's song is available as a download. Ages 3–7. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
PreS-K—In this sequel to Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes (HarperCollins, 2010), Pete is enjoying a day at school. He explores the library, the lunchroom, and the playground, singing happily with each new discovery. As with the first book, this feline is unflappable. He doesn't worry about noise, confusion, or the unfamiliar and takes everything in stride. The problem with this book seems to be the target audience. The repetition and the simple concepts in the first book appeal largely to the preschool set. That same structure is present here, but a school setting that features a library, a lunchroom, riding a school bus, etc., would seem to indicate a child in kindergarten, who has probably moved beyond Pete. Dean's cartoon illustrations are bright and cheerful, although Pete alternates between walking erect with two sneakers and walking on all fours wearing four. Purchase if you service a large preschool population where the first title is popular, but elementary schools can probably pass in favor of something with a little more substance.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ
Kirkus Reviews

Pete, the strangely popular musical cat, is back (Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, 2010), this time showing off all the things he can do in his school shoes.

"Pete is going to school, / and he sings this song: / 'I'm rocking in my school shoes, / I'm rocking in my school shoes, / I'm rocking in my school shoes.' " Readers follow the self-confident Pete through his day as he tackles each new experience. Never been to the library? "Does Pete worry? / Goodness, no!" He just reads in his school shoes. From the lunchroom to the playground, Pete eats, sings, paints, adds and writes. Repetitive refrains abound, giving children the chance to chime in, and there is also an opportunity to guess Pete's destination from clues within the text. As in Pete's first outing, there is not much here to get excited about. It seems to be all about the tune and the song that Pete sings. Luckily, the book includes a gift card with a link to a downloadable song (unheard). Dean's Pete is a hip, laid-back navy-blue cat in enormous high-top red sneakers and sometimes carries a red electric guitar. The long, skinny characters all have half-closed eyes, and all are devoid of facial expression.

As Pete would say, "It's all good," ...unless you don't know the tune—then you just won't get it. (Picture book. 3-7)

I bought this book after discovering Pete the Cat this summer. I have two boys that LOVE these books. I also teach first grade and my class is hooked on Pete. They have been singing and retelling the stories for days! Pete is so upbeat and fun that you can't help but have fun and smile with the kids. Plus Pete teaches the lesson that no matter what happens, don't give up and to keep going. He helps the kids understand that attitude is very important especially when things go wrong. This book is a must have for any teacher of young children.

I bought 2 copies of this book - one for each grandson. They're both 3 and enjoyed the book tremendously. By the third straight read-through (that would be 6 times for grandma!) they each knew the book well. We also downloaded the free song to go with it. In addition, each one's older siblings were soon reading the bookand singing the song with them!

My PreK class loved Pete's first book and I am so excited to begin my school year with Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes. Children have the opportunity to interact with the text from the beginning as we learn about Pete's day at school and sing his catchy song together. Each section describes a location in the school building and asks the reader "Where is Pete?" .....perfect for a followup discussion after our school tour. There is a free download at the publisher's site for a copy of Mr. Eric reading and singing the story (my class has always preferred to hear Mr. Eric read). Pete is perfect for young emergent readers, as they quickly learn the repetition and are "reading" it in no time by themselves. Wonderful book!!!

I bought this book for our school library and our kindergarten teachers shared it with their students. They LOVED it! The students went home singing the downloadable tune. The parents even commented on how much their children loved this book. It's a very good introduction to school.

As with all the other "Pete the Cat" books, this silly cat never fails to entertain my children. The songs are catchy and I hear my kids chanting them long after the story is over. We never get tired of reading about that "groovy" cat!

I'm not sure what makes Pete the Cat cooler:  His fearlessness (Goodness, no!), his singing, or his red hightop Chucks, or maybe a combination of all three.  My little boy first heard a Pete the Cat story at a library story time.  He loved it then, so I ordered him copies of a couple of the books, and he loves them now.  Eric Litwin is a singer/performer of children's music.  That very specialized skill leads to books that are fun to read AND sing, for me and for my four-year-old son.  In Pete the Cat, Rocking My School Shoes, Pete attends his first day of school, something that is entirely new to him and potentially scary.  But does Pete worry?  Goodness, no!  And yes, Pete ROCKS his school shoes. James Dean's illustrations could not be cooler -- red hightop Chucks on a black cat!  James Dean has a witty sense of fun which pervades every page of this delightful book.

We love all the Pete the Cat books! I had never heard of them until they were introduced to my son's preschool class by one of the teachers. Now we own them all except for the Christmas one (we'll buy that one later on). Great story/morals and the illustrations are pretty cute!

Pete’s got some new school shoes and he’s so excited. Don’t you remember the day when that was a big deal? I remember getting my saddle shoes, my black-and-white saddle shoes; I thought I hit the jackpot. They weren’t the most comfortable shoe but I think I shined those shoes constantly. Pete is rocking out in his new school shoes and he’s traipsing everywhere at school in them. He’s asking you the reader to guess where he’s at by giving you hints just before you turn the next page. These red and white shoes look like Converse tennis shoes and they look fantastic on his furry feet. Looking around, I notice he’s the only one at school who is sporting a pair of shoes, he’s really styling. School can be scary but and different but “goodness, no” Pete’s handling things very well. Pete also sings a song with his guitar which he brought with him to school so come along with Pete and check out all the things that Pete is doing at school with his new school shoes. Bright colorful pictures bring this book to life for young readers and the writing catches everyone who hears it.

This colorful book asks kids to sing along with Pete as he rocks in his new school shoes. Pete always has a positive attitude whatever he is doing. A great book for young children befoe starting school year. Exactly right for preschoolers through early elementary, and just as much fun for the reader as the listener Pete’s sense of confidence and cool is a catchy. Kids will want to enjoy it with you again and again.

My daughters love Pete the Cat and his "groovy" tunes. However, as for this book being interactive, we were expecting for the activities to be similar to those that were present in Pete the Cat and His White Shoes. Still love the pictures, color, and of course, the story. Good job Mr. Eric!
