Overview

The year is 1901—it's been twenty-three years since Peter and the Lost Boys returned from Rundoon. Since then, nobody on the island has grown a day older, and the Lost Boys continue their friendship with the Mollusk tribe, and their rivalry with Captain Hook. Meanwhile in London, Molly has married George Darling and is raising three children: Wendy, Michael, and John. One night a visitor appears at her door; it's James, one of Peter's original Lost Boys. He is now working for Scotland Yard and suspects that the heir to England's throne, Prince Albert Edward, is under the influence of shadow creatures. These shadow creatures are determined to find a secret cache of startstuff which fell to London many centuries ago. The starstuff is hidden in an underground vault which has only one key: the Sword of Mercy, a legendary weapon kept with the Crown Jewels. Molly is determined to help, but when she suddenly goes missing, it is up to her eleven-year-old daughter, Wendy, to keep the starstuff out of the Others' clutches. She has heard her mother's stories of a flying boy named Peter Pan, and he may be her only hope in saving the world from a shadowy doom...

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This Peter & The Star Catchers novel involves a secret cache of starstuff, an underground vault, a legendary sword, and a kidnapped woman. Wendy, the daughter of the missing woman, believes that only a flying boy named Peter Pan can rescue her mother and save the world. A swashbuckling adventure series with an enviable flair.
School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's fourth prequel (Hyperion, 2009) to J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan is set in 1902, 23 years after Molly Aster's last adventure with Peter, the Lost Boys, and Captain Hook. There is a new danger facing the heir to England's throne. When Molly tries to investigate and is kidnapped, her daughter Wendy must set out to find the mysterious Peter, who may be the only one who can rescue Molly and save the throne. This is a thrilling adventure with an overseas flight on a makeshift helicopter, constant escapes from crooked authorities and pirates, exciting flights with Peter, and loyal friendship and familial love. Grammy-winning Jim Dale's narration is pure magic. While the first three books in the series form a coherent trilogy, this volume can stand alone for listeners unfamiliar with the previous titles. An excellent addition to library collections.—Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT
VOYA
What happens when courageous and imaginative children turn into adults? Twenty-three years have passed since Peter's last adventures with the Starcatchers, and although Peter is still a reckless boy with the ability to fly, the rest of the world has changed. Peter's friend Molly is now a grown woman, a respectable wife, and mother with a daughter of her own. The Starcatchers have all but disbanded, as there have been no sightings of new starstuff for years and their great enemy Ombra is dead. So when former Lost Boy James, now a London policeman, discovers that Ombra is still alive, Molly does not believe him until it is too late and they are kidnapped by the villain. Luckily Molly's preteen daughter, Wendy, is as brave and resourceful as her mother once was, and she embarks on a dangerous journey to the magical Mollusk Island to enlist Peter's help. Ombra is creepy and menacing, hatching a sinister and deadly plot to steal the hidden cache of remaining starstuff. Ombra is aided by a new and perhaps even scarier henchman, the Skeleton, and Peter struggles to overcome his fear of this terrifying foe. As in all the Starcatchers installments, this adventure is fast and intense, and readers will feel compelled to find out what happens next. Even though it is the fourth volume, the story holds up well on its own and should not be too confusing for readers new to the series. Reviewer: Amy Luedtke
Children's Literature
Molly Aster Darling has put the past behind her and is contentedly raising three children, Wendy, Michael, and John, when James, one of Peter's original Lost Boys brings alarming news. He believes their nemesis, Lord Ombra, survived the rocket explosion and now, twenty-three years after his supposed death, is somehow controlling Prince Albert's closest advisor, von Schatten. Eager to find the Cache, a secret stash of starstuff that fell to London centuries ago, von Schatten has two teams at work: one digs while the other searches for the key to the hidden vault—the tip of Curtana, the legendary sword of Charlemagne. When James and Molly both disappear, Wendy alone knows why and is in a race against time to save her mother and the world from the evil Others. The only solution is to find Peter, a decision that brings together the book's main plots and characters, past and present. Fans of the previous books will relish the reappearance of beloved characters and savor the perfectly woven threads of friendship, family, and courage. Humorous episodes, such as those featuring Uncle Neville and his ornithopter, provide welcome relief from the well-developed and keenly felt elements of fear and malevolence. A satisfying balance of believable history and delightful fantasy, this much-anticipated addition to the "Peter and the Starcatchers" series will keep readers on edge as two skilled storytellers take them on an action-packed adventure with the heroes they love and the villains they love to hate. Meet the Author

Dave Barry
Dave Barry

Dave Barry is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of more than two dozen books including The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog; Dave Barry’s Money Secrets; Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys; Dave Barry Hits Below the Beltway; and Big Trouble.

Ridley Pearson is the bestselling author of twenty-three novels, including the young adult novel The Kingdom Keepers and the adult thrillers Killer Weekend, Cut and Run, The Pied Piper, The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, Beyond Recognition, and Undercurrents.

Biography

In the introduction to Dave Barry Is Not Taking This Sitting Down, the author addresses the desirability of his job as a humor writer and syndicated columnist. "It looks so easy!" he wrote. "...Every year, hundreds of thousands of people try their hand at this demanding profession. After a few months, almost all of them have given up and gone back to the ninth grade."

Yes, Barry is juvenile at times -- but he has achieved the kind of success that can only come from combining a juvenile mind with intelligence, timing, and a keen eye for the absurd. Favorite Barry targets include government inanity, dogs, guys, the Internet, and other oddities of life. He also specializes in weird news and urban myths involving UFO hunters, Pop-Tart science, and toilets. Many of these essays feature the line that has become his catchphrase, "I am not making this up." (Unless, of course, he is introducing something serious and daunting such as a book about the federal government, in which case he reassures that he has made everything up.)

Usually, though, he's not making it up. What he's doing is making it very funny. Whether the target is Congress or commercials, Barry refuses to take anything seriously, least of all himself – but he manages to convey some pretty indicting truths in the process. He's a master of irony and visual punchlines, sometimes interrupting himself with lists, snippets of dialogue, or other on-topic digressions. On the subject of turning 50 and dealing with waning eyesight (a "good thing" about aging, because "you can't read anything"), Barry describes finding restaurant menus suddenly printed "in letters the height of bacteria." He continues: "For some reason, everybody else seemed to be able to read the menus. Not wishing to draw attention to myself, I started ordering my food by simply pointing to a likely looking blur.

ME (pointing to a blur): I'll have this.
WAITER: You'll have "We Do Not Accept Personal Checks"?
ME: Make that medium rare."

Barry has had the most successful and prolific publishing career of any working newspaper columnist, and his humor never seems to go out of style. In 1999, he decided to try his hand at fiction. The result was Big Trouble, a comic thriller à la Carl Hiassen (though filled more with gags than guns) that Entertainment Weekly proclaimed "... not only very funny, [but] sure-footed, even-handed, levelheaded, and other leading book review adjectives." In 2004, he and Ridley Pearson collaborated on Peter and the Starcatchers, a clever prequel to Peter Pan that spawned two additional novels and a series of spin-off children's chapter books.

Along with several other published authors, Barry is a member of the musical group Rock Bottom Remainders. In assessing the band's talents, he has been quoted as saying: "They are not musically skilled, but they are extremely loud."

Good To Know

The Rock Bottom Remainders was originally organized by a publicist to perform at the 1992 American Booksellers Association convention. The members -- which include (or have included) Barry, Stephen King, Amy Tan, Ridley Pearson, Barbara Kingsolver, Mitch Albom, and Matt Groening -- even took their show on the road at one point, turning it into the now out-of-print Mid-Life Confidential: The Rock Bottom Remainders Tour America with Three Chords and an Attitude.

Some things never change: Barry was elected class clown by his Pleasantville High School class in 1965.

Barry got his start in journalism at the Daily Local News in West Chester, Pennsylvania, then worked as a business writing consultant before joining the Miami Herald in 1983.

Attempts to convert Barry's humor to the screen have been less than memorable. The early '90s CBS sitcom based on two of his books and starring Harry Anderson, Dave's World, was short-lived; the spring 2002 release Big Trouble, starring Tim Allen, didn't fare well at the box office. Barry did, however, get a cameo in the latter.

    My son loves it

These books are fantastic. My son is 11 and was a non-reader. I had picked up the first for his sister. His 4th grade teacher read it to the class and he was hooked. Hr was chomping at the bit for Peter and the Sword of Mercy to the point of borrowing it from the school library as soon as it was released. His copy was wrapped and under the Christmas tree waiting for him. He was so excited to get it. The following little bit is from him.

"I really enjoyed the book. I would recommend this to other kids to read." - Andrew age 11

Not a man of many words. As a mom I definitely recommend this book and series. It's a captivating story line that gives some neat background history, pre-Wendy Darling, to the original "Peter Pan". I have seen a kid who didn't want to read not only devour this series but he has moved onto other challenging books as well. Way to go Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson, you are my heroes!

Number 4 in what should have been a 3 book series.

I Loved the previous three books so much that I bought this one with no questions asked and started ravenously reading.
Unfortunately this book abolishes everything the other 3 set up. It was a lot less fun to read.
I was very disappointed by this book.
I wasn't impressed by the chemistry between Peter and Wendy, though I liked Tink a little more.
I still recommend reading it, but don't set your hopes too high.

    A Great Conclusion

"Peter and the Sword of Mercy," by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson is the fourth installment in the amazing series starring Peter Pan. But don't be fooled---this is no ordinary bedtime story about a magical flying boy, it is an action packed novel full of adventure and mystery! Do yourself a favor and pick up the first book in this series and read it! This fourth book is a great conclusion to a series created with imagination and passion by authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson!

Very dark, much creepier. Did not find the characters nearly as true to the original. Decidedly disappointing. :-(
