Overview

The seminal (and New York Times bestselling) biography of MGM actor Peter Lawford, brother-in-law to John F. Kennedy, friend to Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland and others. As Publisher's Weekly describes: "From Bobby-Sox idol to Kennedy spouse and Marilyn Monroe intimate, his life was a dizzying whirl of sex, scandal, an secrets even the tabloids dared not print... Once, Peter Lawford seemed to have it all: a handsome face, a sophisticated wit, a talent that won him overnight stardom and entree into a world of beautiful, powerful people. Veteran of film roles in Easter Parade, Little Women, Good News, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, the actor had romanced screen sirens Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, and Rita Hayworth; joined Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack; become one of sex goddess Marilyn Monroe's closest confidants; and capped it off by marrying into the famed Kennedy clan. But beneath the glamour of his movie-star life, his fairy-tale marriage, and his legendary friends, lived a man beset by childhood demons that would lead him into alcohol, drugs, shocking sexual escapades—and a controversial role in the cover-up of Marilyn Monroe's death. Now, renowned biographer James Spada tells the fascinating, heartrending story of this deeply troubled man, destined to be remembered best for the secrets he took to his grave... revealed here for the first time."

Editorial Reviews

Cosmopolitan Magazine
"Telling Lawford's life story in incredible, disturbing detail, Spada evokes the world of MGM contract players in 1940s Hollywood, the Camelot of the Kennedy years...the horror of life after the President's assassination, and twenty years of descent into hell. It not only makes a brutal, fascinating story but offers glimpses into some events that still obsess us."
Library Journal - Kim Holston
Lawford starred in... movies such as "Good News" and "Little Women"... Spada balances Lawford's professional and personal lives as the ultimately self-destructive actor never could. Spada chronicles Lawford's British heritage, marriages to Pat Kennedy and... close friendships with Judy Garland, and Jackie Kennedy, and his descent into alcohol and drug abuse. This excellently written, thoroughly researched and documented portrait is as compelling as it is distressing. Highly recommended."
Los Angeles Times
“A compelling morality tale, largely because Lawford's life was more Dickensian than Dickens. Compulsive reading."
Showbiz Magazine
"The charming, suave, and debonair actor who was probably best known for being married to JFK's sister Pat and keeping the confidences of the President and Marilyn Monroe, managed to his biggest secret--himself--from the public, until now. Your heart will break as Spada takes you through this courtesan of Camelot's tragic life."

    Wonderful, Just Wonderful (But Heartbreaking)

Peter Lawford, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Liz Taylor, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner -- besides being some of the best looking, most talented and most charming people in the history of the world almost every single one of them ended up being a tragedy unto themselves in multiple ways. That being said, Spada has written the most fascinating, moving, funny, painful, insightful portrait of the culture of Hollywood as seen in relation to the orbit of actor Lawford. Anyone who wants to understand any of the aforementioned individuals needs to read this book to fill in the blanks. Enjoy!

    Good bio

Sad and mesmerizing at the same time. Lawford's undeniable talent and early promise make his downward spiral all the more regrettable. Was he another victim of Dallas?

    An Excellent Read

If there was ever a book that should be back in print, it is this one. I could not put it down! James Spada has captured the essence of the tragic lows and the incredible highs of this often maligned performer/personality. Peter Lawford was indeed an interesting and tragic figure.
