PreS-Gr 2-- Peter is a good truck spotter in his city neighborhood, but he has trouble figuring out what each vehicle carries. Like the folktale character who misapplies information from a previous experience to a new one, he asks each succeeding driver if he's hauling the cargo of the previous truck he's seen. This makes for some predictable hilarity as he asks if there's a piano in the garbage van, and then if there's garbage in the ice-cream truck. Preschoolers will be way ahead of Peter. Who could fail to identify an ice-cream truck with treats painted all over it? Or a cement mixer obviously not pouring money onto the sidewalk? Wolf's writing oscillates distractingly between rhymed text and a snappy, but unrhymed retort from each worker. Smith's appealing watercolor and scraggly black-line illustrations depict the busy life in a cozy, urban neighborhood. While her anatomically correct drawings will satisfy even the most exacting truckaholic, the inconsistent rhyme, less-than-resounding ending, and obtuse protagonist may wear on some readers. --Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA
