Great Field Guide for Bird Watching

This book gives pictures of several members of the same family of birds. It shows the juvenile, adult and female variety. Brief and relevant data on them. Found it very useful and entertaining.

    Terrific Update

This book is invaluable for birders. What a great improvement from previous editions with the movement of the migratory map information from the back to text adjoining the actual bird data. No more holding your place and fumbling through the back to find the map. Illustrations are larger, and although the book is heavy the slick pages will resist rain, dew and dirty hands, making it ideal for backpack and carrying in the field.

    An Excellent Memorial/Tribute

I am not rating this book as a field guide, but as a memorial to Peterson. The over-sized paintings show his artistic skills. His vision of an easy to use book for bird watchers led to one of the most important books of the 20th century. The Peterson Guide made millions of bird watchers and led to the mainstreaming of the conservation movement. This volume is a tribute to his life and passion for birds.

    I Also Recommend:

    A must-have for birding.

Long considered the birder's "Bible", this is a wonderful field guide that is easy to use. Peterson is known for using easily noticed details that help even a novice birder in quick identification.

    Simply the best ...

We're birding amateurs, so our comments do not reflect a deep knowledge of ornithology. They are pertinent to folks like us who delight in watching birds, identifying them when we're not sure what they are, and learning more about their habits.

The illustrations in the new Peterson guide are better than other guides we've used, capitalizing on and enhancing Roger Peterson's originals. Birds are drawn rather than photographed, better to capture each species' distinctive features. In addition, arrows point to features that distinguish similar species. Quite simply, the images are as visually appealing as Audubon's.

When we think we've seen a new species at our backyard feeders we often "cheat" by first consulting a guide to our local birds to narrow the possibilities. Then we consult Peterson for our ultimate identification.

We've liked Peterson so much we've gifted the book to others. It's not cheap, but considering the wealth of information and huge effort it took to put it all together, I'd be surprised if the contributors will reap more than pennies an hour for their work on this standard-setting achievement.
