Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Lightweight fun."—Kirkus Reviews
Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Pete the pink poodle (of Pete and Fremont) plans to run away from the circus after the other performing animals give him the dreaded Silent Treatment for biting his scene-stealing, show-wrecking partner, Rita the chimp, under the Big Top. After all, it might be better to be the pet of the tabloid darling, "the Airhead Heiress," whose Chihuahua ("Baby") has just been dognapped for ransom. But a tornado ends up whirling both Pete and Rita off from Florida to—yes, Kansas. There they reconcile, befriend a duck who yearns for circus stardom, and of course end up rescuing the dognapped lapdog, collecting the proffered reward, and returning to the circus covered with glory. It is a completely satisfying romp of a tale, generously illustrated by Manders's energetic cartoons. What makes the book is Pete's narrative voice: egocentric, tough-talking, wisecracking. Lines like "I knew Rita would be sorry after she'd choked me to death. But that wouldn't help me any" and "We made as cute a family picture as you ever saw. Considering Rita was in it, I mean" keep the reader cheerfully gobbling up this altogether delectable morsel, ready ourselves to run away to join Pete, Rita, and Quackers in the circus. Gr 3-5

Like Pete and Fremont (Harcourt, 2007), this story is chock-full of humor, heart, and fleshed-out characters. Pete the poodle is wowing audiences at the Circus Martinez with his new partner, Rita the chimp. But their act takes a nosedive when she upstages him during a performance, prompting Pete to bite her and then inadvertently bite the ringmaster-a big no-no in circus protocol. As a result, all of the other animal performers give him the silent treatment. Pete decides it's time to run away, but before he can, he and Rita get swept away in a tornado, landing in Walnut Hill, KS. There's no place like home, and Pete is determined to make it back to his circus family with Rita and a duck named Quackers as his traveling companions. Along the way, they encounter hardship, criminals, and unlikely alliances. The bickering between Pete and Rita will ring true to children with siblings. The chapters are action-packed and short, making this an appealing book for reluctant readers. This sequel does not disappoint.-Beth Cuddy, Seward Elementary School, Auburn, NY

Kirkus Reviews
In a reverse Wizard of Oz effect, a twister takes circus pooch Pierre Le Chien to Kansas in this amusing sequel to Pete and Fremont (2007). Once again Pete's huge ego fetches big trouble. After not only biting partner/rival Rita the chimp on the butt during a performance but having an "accidental dental encounter" with the Ringmaster himself, Pete's act is dropped from the show and he gets the dreaded Silent Treatment from all the other animals. During a subsequent huff-inspired runaway attempt, he's whirled off, along with Rita, to a farm far from the circus's comforts. Several comical rustic encounters later, the two set out for its off-season home in Florida-an odyssey that features being rammed by a riverboat, freeing a flock of captured parrots and bringing a trio of ill-intentioned dognappers to justice. Pete's relentless puffery may get on readers' nerves, but by the time of his joyful, all-sins-forgiven reunion with the circus, he's toned it down enough to welcome a new partner, Quackers the dancing duck, to the act. Lightweight fun. (Fantasy. 9-11)
