Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This book is part of the "Super Bowl Superstars" series focused primarily on football players who are not only great in their positions but are also humanitarians in some way off the field. In this case, the focus is on Peyton Manning, the (former) quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, and his work on the field as well as with local agencies in Indiana, Tennessee, and Louisiana that support leadership and athletic programs for kids. Nine chapters focus, alternately, on the Manning family history of quarterbacking and Peyton's foundation, "Peyback," and its work in Indianapolis with foster care and Special Olympics, support for the University of Tennessee as well as other public entities through grants, and grants that support everything from Hurricane Katrina relief to the fight against hunger in Louisana. Text boxes throughout the book highlight information about Manning as well as the charities to which he has given grants. Photographs of Peyton Manning as quarterback as well as pictures of him interacting with the public add to the book and encourage less-motivated readers to pick it up. As with all solid series, this book and its counterparts have a well-developed glossary, bibliography, and "Read More" section. Also included is access to a website about Manning that provides more information for younger fans. This text and the series in general provide football fans with a quick and focused look at one of their favorite players. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
