Overview

On the one hand, Phantasia is an arrangement of tunes from Andrew Lloyd Webber's record-breaking musical Phantom of the Opera. On the other, it's a romantic double concerto for virtuoso violin and cello with orchestra. What's surprising is how completely it succeeds on both levels. Although Phantom fans are probably the target audience here, you don't need to know -- or even to like -- Lloyd Webber's work to be swept away by this colorful, passionate, and dramatic score. The triumph of Phantasia owes much to the skill of arranger Geoff Alexander, who brilliantly translates not only Lloyd Webber's melodies but also the arch of the show's drama into a half hour of instrumental music. Cleverly, the solo cello impersonates the Phantom, while the violin takes the part of Christine, and the performers here are as eloquent in the roles as anyone who has performed them on stage: Sarah Chang, known to classical music fans as one of the finest violinists of her generation, and Julian Lloyd Webber, not only the composer's brother but also among the world's leading cellists. The Woman in White, a more recent Andrew Lloyd Webber show, is the source for the other orchestral suite recorded here. Since the tunes aren't (yet) as well known, and the strong emotional presence of the soloists is absent, it isn't quite as mesmerizing as Phantasia, yet it's a sophisticated score that offers much to enjoy and proves that Lloyd Webber is still at the top of the musical theater heap.
