Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-5-- A well-researched book about ghostly animals that are sometimes helpful and other times devious in their dealings with humans. Readers meet cats and dogs as well as a kangaroo, a tiger, a mongoose, and rats. Each account is simply told in two to four pages. Many of the selections take place in England, a few in America. The rest are scattered around the world. They cover a wide time range, from past to present. The introduction is straightforward; the entire book is easily understandable. While the tales are sinister, they are not particularly scary. Phantom Animals is attractively clean, free of illustrations, with a suitable front cover that will beckon browsers. While the format differs from Patricia Edwards Clyne's Ghostly Animals of America (Dodd, 1977; o.p.), the writing style and premise are much the same. A fine purchase for collections needing more material in this area. --Molly Kinney, Miami Dade Public Library System, Miami, FL

My favorite character is The Phantom Cougar. This is great because it can have you scared out your wits sometimes because while you sleep you scare your-self as you sleep because you start to think about it.If you like scarey books you'll like this one.
