A creative and challenging way of teaching requirements on Egyptian culture and the identification of pyramids to elementary students. Gr 4-6These books, like many CD-ROMs, attempt to use games as a way to teach history. In addition to puzzles and simple guessing games, children must find clues to solve a murder mystery and locate out-of-place objects in the illustrations. But whereas youngsters can just point and click on a computer, in these books, they need to turn pages, skip sections, and even turn the books upside down. Finding clues in illustrations is a great idea, but only when the pictures are large enough to be seen. Locating objects here is like looking for a lost grain of sand in the Sahara. And the mechanics are just part of the problem. The information the questions ask is not always provided in the book, so readers must guess at the answers. Also, the crisscross of games and facts complicates one's abilities to separate history from fiction. It's a shame, because there are some good factoids in both books. But the poor organization of these titles makes them frustrating to use and hard to recommend.Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
