Description: This book discusses the new but growing field of pharmacoepidemiology. With the ever increasing number of new drugs, this field will also continue to expand. This fourth edition includes several new chapters and has updated older chapters. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: This is a highly useful introduction to pharmacoepidemiology. It also serves as a key reference for people interested in this new field.
Audience: The audience for this book includes physicians as well as graduate students in pharmacy, nursing, and public health.
Features: The book is broad in scope and at the same time comprehensive. Its 49 chapters are grouped into six sections: 1) introduction, 2) perspectives in pharmacoepidemiology, 3) sources of data for pharmacoepidemiology, 4) selected special applications of pharmacoepidemiology, 5) selected special methodologic issues in pharmacoepidemiology, and 6) conclusion.
Assessment: This is well written and well researched. The editor, Dr. Brian L. Strom, is a national figure in medicine and the chapter authors are respected professionals in the fields they represent. The book also has the added feature of a seven-page glossary of terms, and a large 23-page index of authors and topics.
