Reviewer: Regina Rosa Lopez, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: In this clinically relevant review of the recent literature on the therapeutic modalities of schizophrenia, some chapters use algorithms and tables to summarize information. The first edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: According to the editors, the purpose is to provide an authoritative review of pharmacological and psychosocial treatment interventions for individuals with schizophrenia and related disorders. These are worthy objectives. However, although the book does provide a general knowledge base, it lacks the depth and detail clinicians need for treating this patient population.
Audience: The intended audience is clinicians and service providers. Individuals in the mental health field who want a general overview would benefit from this book. The editors and authors are affiliated with academic institutions from multiple countries.
Features: In addition to covering the general psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions used in managing schizophrenia, the book covers the management of specific problematic symptoms of schizophrenia, as well as its medical and substance abuse comorbidities. It also covers such topics as violent behavior and acute behavioral disturbances in psychosis. Specific treatment issues such as medical adherence, family interventions, and difficulties in social and occupational functioning are also addressed. Gender specific differences are explored. Finally, a chapter contains descriptions of rating scales relevant to the disorder. When used, the tables, algorithms, and figures are concise and clear. A shortcoming of this book is that the psychopharmacology in most chapters is not detailed enough for treating clinicians. Additionally, the psychosocial treatment section is brief. When these interventions are discussed elsewhere in the book, there is a lack of comprehensiveness.
Assessment: This book does provide a general overview, and it does bring up relevant topics pertinent to the treatment of schizophrenic patients today. Given this, it should be used only as a review for those in the mental health field. The second edition includes new chapters on such topics as comorbid general health issues and the special needs of women with schizophrenia, therefore justifying replacing the previous edition.
