Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This excellent book covers the pharmacological treatment of patients with common neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, this book is a valuable contribution to primary care medicine, psychiatry, neurology, and neuropsychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the editors, "... is to make accessible to the primary care physician, as well as physicians in training, the advances in diagnosis and treatment of neurologic and psychiatric disorders." The editors point out that a significant proportion of the patients in primary care practices suffer from neuropsychiatric illnesses, making knowledge of this field essential. The editors and contributors of this volume have succeeded in producing a very readable textbook and reference guide.
Audience: The intended audience is primary care physicians. It would also benefit psychiatrists, neurologists, physiatrists, neurology, psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry trainees, and any other professional who cares for patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Features: This book features 594 pages divided into 16 chapters, including an index section. It is also cross-referenced with Gilman's Goodman and Gilman's: The Pharmaceutical Basis of Therapeutics, 8th Edition (McGrawHill, 1990). Topics covered include an overview of neuropsychopharmacology, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, affective disorders, attention deficit and developmental disorders, OCD and Tourette, substance related disorders, sleep disorders, delirium and dementia, neuromuscular disorders, extrapyramidal disorders, multiple sclerosis, pain, epilepsy, stroke, and headache. Each chapter is filled with quite useful algorithms for diagnosing and treating the various disorders. Also, each chapter ends with relevant and up-to-date references. The index was helpful in locating specific topics.
Assessment: This is a valuable and comprehensive book summarizing the state of the art in the pharmacological treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. I highly recommend it for the primary care physician.
