This is a very detailed pharmacology textbook. It covers many areas in great detail with appropriately applied physiology. The nursing components are integrated throughout the text as well as summarized into nursing implications at the end of most chapters. Each chapter has a list of key points for review. The purpose is to establish a knowledge base in the basic science of drugs and to demonstrate application in the clinical area. The purpose is met, but more case studies for easier clinical application could have been incorporated. This book also strives to focus on the essentials needed in nursing care and downplays secondary details by utilizing different sizes of print. This makes it easier to scan a page for important information. The target audience is nursing students in a pharmacology course. The level of physiology and detail may or may not be appropriate for integrated curricula. It is an excellent clinical review and resource for practitioners and educators. The references were few and located in the text instead of at the end of each chapter, which makes them difficult to locate. The content appears complete; new sections include Pediatric Immunization, Drug Therapy Across the Life Span, and an appendix for Drug-Related Information on the Internet. This list of Internet sites is appropriate and a great resource for the learner. The disk provided has a drug database of 200 drugs and NCLEX review questions. The review is easy to use and provides feedback on correct and incorrect answers. The database is very small and requires the students to actually cut and paste a card together. This textbook is an excellent resource and is suitable for a pharmacologycourse.

Description: This informative, well-written nursing textbook provides clear and understandable descriptions of complex physiologic processes, integrating aspects of clinical relevance for nursing into the discussion.
Purpose: Dr. Lehne states that the purpose is to be a "true textbook," providing the essentials and minimizing secondary details. Two objectives are expressly stated: to establish a knowledge base in the basic science of drugs, and to demonstrate how that knowledge can be directly applied in providing patient care and patient education. Dr.Lehne accomplishes these worthy objectives in a very thorough book.
Audience: The target audience is nursing students, practicing nurses, and educators. The book would also be quite useful for graduate nursing students and advanced practice nurses such as nurse practitioners. Dr.Lehne has a well-earned reputation as an outstanding pharmacologist and nursing educator. Publication of this fourth edition of is a tribute to Dr. Lehne's expertise and success as an author.
Features: The book is comprehensive, encompassing discussions of the major categories of pharmacologic agents. In addition, three new chapters (pain management in cancer patients, obesity therapeutics, herbal supplements) and 140 new drugs are included in this edition. The Key Points feature at the end of each chapter is most useful for planning client and family education. In particular, the Summary of Major Nursing Implications provides the essential nursing decision making information. Chapter 53 on hematopoietic and thrombopoietic growth factors is especially relevant to current oncologic nursing practice. It provides a demystified discussion of colony stimulating growth factors and recombinant DNA products that are now in widepread clinical use. The only shortcoming is the absence of reference material. This is unfortunate, as an opportunity to expose the reader to state-of-the-art scientific and clinical research is missed.
Assessment: I found this book to be extremely readable. It provides the basics and more. Dr. Lehne describes it as the book that students like to read and I couldn't agree more! It is written at a level that will make it very marketable. On a personal note, I was privileged to take Dr. Lehne's pharamcology course while a graduate student at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. I have long enjoyed his textbooks and style of teaching.

    I teach out of this text and it is a wonderful and complete resource for nursing students. Lehne writes in a style that is easy to read and comprehend. I truly recommend this text to any nursing professors and to all nurses who need a reference text for Pharmacology.
