Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
US Student: “Great format and chapter outline. The descriptions are very concise and have great information. The tables with the side effect comparisons of drugs in the same category are wonderful. The pictures that describe the mechanisms of action help illustrate and assist you in remembering the material.”

"This pharmacology textbook is one of the best for teaching a basic pharmacology course. This third edition is markedly improved over the earlier ones. Although designed especially for osteopathic and allopathic medical students, this book also would serve as an excellent text for pharmacy, nursing, and other allied health professions students who are required to take a basic pharmacology course. This book will function as a useful text for both discipline-based and integration-based curricula. Weighted Numerical Score: 98 - 5 Stars!" - Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD(University of Kansas Medical Center), from Doody’s Reviews

Reviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is a popular textbook for students who are studying pharmacology for the first time or are preparing for certification examinations.
Purpose: The authors state that it is intended primarily for students who are taking their first course in pharmacology, but it also will be useful for those who are preparing to take medical board or licensing examinations. This book serves both roles very well.
Audience: It is adequate for any student who is required to take pharmacology in their curriculum or prepare for licensure examinations such as those pursuing medical, pharmacy, nursing, or other health professional degrees.
Features: The book is organized similar to any traditional pharmacology textbook, starting out with a section on principles of pharmacology followed by individual sections discussing the pharmacology of the composite of therapeutic entities. A uniform format is used from chapter to chapter — each one begins with a box classifying the drugs discussed in the chapter followed by an overview, including germane pathophysiology, plus a discussion of the drugs organized according to mechanisms of action, physiological effects, pharmacokinetic properties, adverse effects and interactions, and clinical uses. For ease of learning, the book includes several excellently designed full-color illustrations and summary tables. Each chapter has a relevant clinical case plus discussion and ends with a summary of important points and relevant review questions with answers and explanations. A scratch-off pin number provides access to the full text online as well as other study features, including 150 USMLE-style questions, animations, etc.
Assessment: This popular pharmacology textbook improves with each edition and rivals Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 12th edition, Katzung et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2012), as the most required textbook for pharmacology courses.
