Overview

This highly acclaimed textbook is a worldwide bestseller, recognized for its emphasis on the mechanisms by which drugs act at the cellular and molecular levels and how that relates to their overall pharmacological effects and clinical uses. The 5th Edition includes four new chapters, a reorganized and expanded section on treatments for infections and cancer, and thorough updates throughout that explore new treatments and advances in molecular biology that may lead to future therapeutic options for cancer, HIV infection, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disorders, erectile dysfunction, obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiac failure, and more. User-friendly features include new chapter overviews · reviews of relevant physiology and biochemistry · boxed key points and clinical uses · references and reading lists · a new full-color art program · and new "small print" sections that separate the more complex material from the main discussion thread in each chapter, leaving the depth of coverage to the reader's discretion.

The smart way to study!
Elsevier titles with STUDENT CONSULT will help you master difficult concepts and study more efficiently in print and online! Perform rapid searches. Integrate bonus content from other disciplines. Download text to your handheld device. And a lot more. Each STUDENT CONSULT title comes with full text online, a unique image library, case studies, USMLE style questions, and online note-taking to enhance your learning experience.

• Reviews relevant physiological and biochemical processes at the beginning of most chapters to provide a framework for discussing the mechanisms and actions of drugs that affect those processes.

• Discusses not only what drugs do, but also how they do it—the mechanisms of action at the cellular and molecular levels.

• Places boxed key points throughout the text, offering readers at-a-glance access to essential knowledge.

• Provides overviews of the therapeutic uses of different drug classes in "clinical uses" boxes throughout the text.

• Offers brief coverage, where appropriate, of how certain pharmacological compounds are used to explore cellular and physiological functions outside the clinical setting.

• Facilitates additional research with annotated references and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter.

Your purchase of this book entitles you to access www.studentconsult.com at no extra charge. This innovative web site offers you...

• Access to the complete text and illustrations of this book.

• Look for the STUDENT CONSULT logo on your favorite Elsevier textbooks!

Features a full-color page design and art program, with completely redrawn diagrams and many new figures.

• Begins each chapter with an "Overview" section that details the scope and order of topics to be covered.

• Covers not only new agents, but also the advances in molecular biology that are driving further drug development, new treatments in the pipeline, and relevant regulatory controls.

• Gives readers the option to explore selected topics in greater depth through "small print" sections that contain complex and sometimes speculative material that is complementary, but not essential to the main discussion thread in each chapter.

• Includes four new chapters: an introductory chapter entitled What is Pharmacology? · two chapters on cellular processes that are affected by many of the drugs described later in the book, Excitation, Contraction, and Secretion and Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis · and a final chapter on Drug Discovery and Development.

• Devotes more coverage to the drugs used to fight infectious agents, creating separate chapters for antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, and antihelminthic drugs as well as cancer chemotherapy in the newly retitled Drugs Used in the Treatment of Infections and Cancer section.

"...a concise introduction to the fundamental principles of pharmacology and mechanisms of drug action that focuses on how drugs work--on the cellular and molecular level when possible...features FDA-approved drugs only."

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
This is yet another classic book that has become a favourite with medical students across the UK. Rang et al provides such a solid basis for first and second year Pharmacology, that you are in some of the safest hands. With marvellous diagrams and "cramming" blue summary boxes, the layout is well thought out and very useful. This book is one of the best you will find. It's especially perfect for during revision.

From The Critics
Reviewer:Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This sixth edition of a popular British pharmacology book is an improved version of an excellent textbook. Its scope and nomenclature make it a better option for pharmacology courses taught in European Union member nations than the U.S.
Purpose:This is both an authoritative and comprehensive textbook, making it an excellent resource for high-level pharmacology courses. It does an outstanding job of incorporating foundation information from chemical, molecular, biochemical, cellular, and physiological sciences into the understanding of drug actions. The authors have done a wonderful job of translating complex issues into a better understanding of drug actions.
Audience:This is an excellent resource and most appropriate for courses in the education of pharmacists, physicians, and graduate level scientists on the basics of drug actions.
Features:The book is divided into sections on general principles, chemical mediators, drugs affecting major organ systems, the nervous system, drugs used in the treatment of infections and cancers. A final section on special topics includes variation in individual responses to drugs, potential harmful affects of drugs, lifestyle issues and drugs, biopharmaceutics and gene therapy, as well as drug discovery and development. All chapters have been updated to include new and important information and three new chapters have been added: one on cannabinoids, one on lifestyle drugs and drugs used in sports, and one on biopharmaceuticals and advances in gene therapy. The figures and tables are of the highest quality and add enormously to the attractiveness of this publication. The book is well referenced including numerous URLs to useful information related to drug actions and uses.
Assessment:This is an excellent book that compares favorably with other popular pharmacology textbooks such as Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 11th edition, by Brunton, et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2005) and Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, 10th edition, by Katzung (McGraw-Hill, 2006).
Booknews
New edition (first in 1987) of a textbook for preclinical medical students and science students, with all sections updated, many new agents included as well as extensions of the basic knowledge which presage further drug development, and new sections on new topics such as 5-HT, peptides as mediators, amino-acid transmitters, agents affecting ion channels, cytokines, and approaches to the therapy of AIDS.
