Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Melissa M. Ranieri, BS, PharmD (Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description: Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach is one of the most widely utilized and respected textbooks used in pharmacy education across the country. With its ninth edition, the reference succeeds in providing updated, evidence-based information in a concise manner that is easy to comprehend and apply.
Purpose: One of the main goals with this latest edition was to provide the most essential pathophysiologic and therapeutic concepts that young pharmacists need in practice. Each chapter has been updated with current guidelines and evidence-based medicine. However, the content is organized in such a manner as to streamline complex material. This is critical for today's pharmacist practicing in an evolving and fast-paced clinical setting. However, some of the algorithms contain perhaps too much information since the text was abbreviated. Overall, complex topics are easier to comprehend while providing accurate and current knowledge.
Audience: One of the nice features of Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach is that is useful for a variety of healthcare professionals. Although the majority of authors are pharmacists and the text is widely utilized in pharmacy education, other healthcare providers can benefit from this resource as well. The content is so comprehensive and versatile that nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants and students from multiple disciplines can apply these concepts. With over 300 authors, the majority of which are PharmDs, this text is highly regarded and is one of the main pharmacotherapy references for pharmacy students and pharmacists clinicians alike.
Features: Perhaps what is most noteworthy about this ninth edition of Phamacotherapy is that the chapters really streamline information so that concepts are easier to understand. This is really important so that students can fully grasp the most clinically relevant ideas. The use of tables, charts and algorithms to summarize information is effective in most cases. However, some of the algorithms contain more information than is necessary and are harder to follow. Perhaps some of the algorithms could be simplified in future editions by including non-essential information in the text. Diagrams are enlarged and more colorful in this edition. However, some of the pathophysiology figures are more complicated compared to previous versions (i.e., osteoporosis bone remodeling). Some of the information contained in these diagrams is too detailed for the scope of practice for pharmacy. One of the noteworthy features of each chapter are the "clinical controversy" snapshots which address current issues such as pharmacogenomics or triple antithrombotic therapy in the acute coronary syndrome chapter. Overall, the text succeeds in providing current, evidence-based medicine in a more streamlined format that is easier for students and pharmacists to comprehend and apply.
Assessment: The newest version of Pharmacotherapy has improved its format so that complex topics are easier to learn and apply in clinical practice. The text utilizes diagrams, tables and algorithms efficiently to organize information that is thorough, yet easily accessible. Once again, Pharmacotherapy has provided a comprehensive, reliable and clinically relevant reference that will be highly utilized by pharmacy learners and practitioners alike.
