From The CriticsReviewer: Barbara L Giacomelli, PharmD., MBA (McKesson Provider Technologies)
Description: This is collection of cases to help teach pharmacology of various disease states and conditions. It presents relevant cases found in clinical practice along with appropriate therapies.
Purpose: This book is designed to teach students how to manage various conditions and/or disease states they'll encounter in practice. It is a worthwhile teaching tool.
Audience: It is written to educate practitioners who will manage patients in healthcare settings, primarily pharmacists and nurses. The cases are examples of those practitioners deal with everyday.
Features: Each case is outlined in great detail with relevant questions for practitioners to answer at the end. The cases cover diseases and conditions affecting all parts of the body, with the longest section on infectious diseases. Cases also have additional follow-up questions to help educate. The book is written at the level of a student who has a basic understanding of pharmacology.
Assessment: Although this is the eighth edition, most of the cases and medications appeared in previous editions. However, it is a nice supplement to use when teaching pharmacology to help reinforce medication therapy treatments and patient monitoring. It helps students use critical thinking skills to review the case and answer the questions.
