Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Michael C Barros, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCACP (Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description: These flashcards present a very organized series of patient cases covering many pertinent disease states. Each case is followed by a therapeutic question and an organized, detailed explanation including drug class, mechanism of action, contraindications/precautions, adverse effects, monitoring, and clinical pearls.
Purpose: These were designed with health professional students in mind. The cards offer students the ability to practice pharmacotherapeutic decision making in a way similar to other pharmacotherapy case-study references. The cards help students develop the critical-thinking skills necessary for success in their professional careers.
Audience: Although intended for health professional students, these flashcards are a great review of evidence-based medicine pertaining to many disease states that both students and practitioners may find useful.
Features: For a product of its size, these cards provide a great amount of therapeutic information. The set includes a table of contents organized by disease state, medical abbreviations, and adult reference values for laboratory parameters. Each patient case offers case notes that provide evidence-based therapeutic rationale and clinical pearls to emphasize key points.
Assessment: These cards offer concise yet detailed case studies for students to review current pharmacotherapeutic options for many of the commonly encountered disease states. They are comparable to current case-study books, including Pharmacotherapy Casebook: A Patient-Focused Approach, 8th edition, Schwinghammer and Koehler (McGraw-Hill, 2011). Students might find these cards to be a very helpful in addition to their therapeutics courses to help them retain knowledge through the use of real-life clinical scenarios.
