This reference is a brief overview of the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of different disorders affecting the human body. In addition, detailed information on treatment options available is also outlined, with particular emphasis on pharmacotherapeutic considerations. The editors devote an entire section to the discussion of basic concepts such as pharmacoeconomics, clinical pharmacokinetics, and clinical toxicology, among others. The purpose is to promote an understanding of pharmacotherapeutic principles and strategies and therefore promote an advanced level of provision of pharmaceutical care. The targeted audiences are pharmacy students, developing practitioners, and those interested in providing pharmaceutical care. Contributors to each section address disorders of a particular origin (i.e., cardiovascular or neurologic). Each chapter contains information in text format complemented by tables, charts, and appropriate treatment algorithms. Overall, this book is well organized, easy to navigate, and readable. This is a valuable reference for pharmacy students and entry-level practitioners. It is a useful reference for established practitioners interested in increasing their learning and understanding of pharmacotherapeutic issues for disorders outside of their primary area of practice. Although the fourth edition is an improvement on the previous editions in terms of content and presentation, information on pharmaceutical care provided in this reference should be complemented with recently published information. Furthermore, the reference is not inclusive of pharmacotherapy for all disorders, and therefore other references need to beconsulted.

The present edition contains 132 chapters contributed by educators and practitioners affiliated with various college and university pharmacy departments. The overall organization of previous editions is retained, as is the emphasis on understanding disease mechanisms and principles of therapy. New chapters have been added on disorders of the pituitary gland and substance-related disorders, and treatment sections in each chapter are now boxed, making them easier to locate. The first seven chapters cover fundamentals, such as pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, and clinical toxicology. Most of the remaining chapters focus on the epidemiology, pathophysicology, clinical presentation, desired outcomes, treatment, and treatment evaluation of specific disease states. Annotation c.
