Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Melissa M. Ranieri, BS, PharmD (Temple University School of Pharmacy)
Description: This is the eighth edition of a comprehensive reference dedicated to providing the latest information on the pathophysiology and therapeutic management of a range of disease states. Information is evidence-based, current, and outlined in a way that emphasizes key points and can be applied in clinical practice.
Purpose: The editors are renowned, well-established experts in the field of pharmacy who are dedicated to providing information that is complete and reflective of the latest guidelines and practice standards. They accomplish this goal yet again with this new edition. A multitude of authors, all experts in their respective fields, have contributed chapters.
Audience: This is versatile reference that can be used by pharmacists, pharmacy students, instructors, and other healthcare practitioners who are seeking the latest and most comprehensive information on disease state pathophysiology and management. Summarized concepts in tables and flow algorithms make information easily accessible and ready to be applied in practice. As with any reference, the one caveat is that the most current information cannot always be provided since guidelines and evidence-based medicine are constantly changing. However, the authors make every effort to be current and in accord with practice standards.
Features: This edition adds six new chapters and covers a wide variety of disease states. Novel topics reflect the evolving practice of medicine and include palliative care, health literacy, cultural competency and medication safety. Learning strategies that emphasize important concepts are used throughout. Each section opens with key concepts, which highlight the most critical information. Charts and flow algorithms present information in a way that can be easily referenced and applied in clinical practice. For example, the osteoporosis chapter covers dosing, adverse effects, and drug interactions clearly outlined in table format. The osteoporosis treatment algorithm clearly denotes which therapies are first-line and when in the course of the disease to institute preventive measures, as well as treatment modalities. A section in each chapter of clinical controversies highlights topics that are currently being debated in practice. These topics are well chosen, are clinically relevant, and include how healthcare practitioners are handling these issues in practice. Finally, the book is well referenced with over 100 references for each chapter, which directs readers to further information if needed. As a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy, I find the book clearly written, as well as thorough and current. However, students sometimes describe the information as dense, and the authors have addressed this concern by summarizing topics more succinctly than in previous editions. I think they have succeeded, and the change is noticeable when perusing topics and it will help students and newer practitioners grasp important concepts more easily.
Assessment: This is a gold standard reference in pharmacy and the information it provides equips readers with the knowledge base and confidence to provide the highest quality of patient care.
