Description: This companion workbook for the text Pharmacotherapy: a Pathophysiologic Approach presents 114 case study reviews on a multitude of topics. It is divided into five parts and includes patient-focused therapy (four introductory chapters), disorders of organ systems, diseases of infectious origin, oncologic disorders, and nutrition/nutritional disorders.
Purpose: The book provides case studies to help develop skills in identifying and resolving drug-related problems. It fosters skills in self-study, problem analysis, the decision-making process, and communication in the modern aspects of patient-focused drug therapy.
Audience: The primary audience is the pharmacy student, and the secondary audience includes pharmacists pursuing further case study application of drug therapy.
Features: The patient-focused therapy section contains introductory chapters on the casebook usage, problem-based learning, patient communication, and pharmacist interventions. The organ systems section contains 13 subsections (e.g., cardiovascular, respiratory, etc.), with further breakdown under each heading. The infectious diseases section contains 20 cases on topics including bacterial meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, STDs, HIV infection, etc. The oncologic section contains 9 case studies on various cancers including breast, lung, and the leukemias. The nutrition section contains cases on parenteral and enteral nutrition. Three appendixes contain common lab values, medical abbreviations, and sample responses. The case format is organized with objectives followed by the patient presentation. Questions are then directed at problem identification, desired outcomes, therapeutic alternatives, optimal plan, assessment parameters, and patient counseling. Each case generally concludes with follow-up question(s), clinical course summaries, self-study assignments, a clinical pearl, and references.
Assessment: The authors have compiled a companion case review book that helps illustrate concepts of pharmacotherapy that may be missing when reading the general text. The reader must critically think, research, and evaluate each case. However, students may request immediate feedback to these cases, which may not be available to them, because a separate instructor's text contains the answers.
