From The CriticsReviewer: Connie Larson, PharmD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is a compilation of pertinent regulations, laws, and accreditation standards applicable to the pharmacy department. The book includes helpful information and forms/tools to use to increase compliance and enhance pharmacy services.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide pharmacy managers with needed information in an easy-to-use compliance tool that considers patient care concerns and limited resources.
Audience: The intended audience is pharmacy managers. Pharmacy residents exposed to administrative training could utilize this resource as well.
Features: The Hospital Accreditation Standards Analysis section highlights the intent of the standard and what evidence is needed to show compliance. Also included are sample questions that can be reviewed with staff. The Reference Materials for Pharmacy Department Compliance section contains a variety of forms/tools developed by institutions all over the country. This section is useful if the reader's institution lacks a needed document, or as an aid in reviewing current processes and policies and procedures. A diskette is included with the book so that readers can personalize the forms to their institution.
Assessment: This book is quite useful for pharmacy departments, particularly ones struggling to get systems and written documents established. Since the JCAHO has geared standards to a multidisciplinary approach, it is harder to identify the role of individual departments. This book is a complement to other books in the field due to its narrower focus.
