Purpose: This is the most comprehensive pharmacy management book I have ever seen. It is suitable for all types of practice settings: community/retail, hospital, etc. It is nearly a one-stop single resource for one opening a new pharmacy or owning or managing an existing pharmacy. In essence, it provides an understanding for the role of management in pharmacy practice. The book covers core topics as well as valuable peripheral topics and themes that will be of value to managers.
Audience: There are two principal audiences. The obvious one is students in management courses in pharmacy schools, and the other one is practitioners who are in management or administrative positions or preparing for such positions. It is equally useful for general practice as well as in specialized practices of all types. While a wide spectrum of topics is covered, they are not covered in equal depth. Some chapters go into very precise detail while others are more superficial, but none of the chapters is bad. The 34 chapters are written by 36 authors. Some of the authors are recognized and respected senior educators and researchers representing some of the leading institutions in the country and some are less well known, from institutions that are not well established or known yet.
Features: "The chapters contain a list of learning objectives, literature citations for further study, and practice questions for self-evaluation of content mastery. This 2009 second edition includes information about the Medicare Part D program, updates with new information and literature references for each chapter, and an interesting new chapter on leadership in management. It could be argued that some chapters might more appropriately belong in a clinically oriented book, such as managing medication errors, for example. The index is detailed and useful. "
Assessment: This well organized and well written book is a good contribution to the field. The features of each chapter make it suitable for self-study as well as a textbook. Some of the marketing chapters might be better off in a book focused solely on marketing. Nevertheless, it is a valuable, easy to use book that should be successful in the marketplace. It is superior to the earlier edition and to other, currently available management books. It is a plus that nearly all examples and cases use pharmacy settings.

    Broad Range of Information

    The information that is contained in this book is vast. It covers several economic factors (balance sheets, analysis,etc) but also marketing, humanistic outcomes, and other aspects of the career of pharmacy they label management. But there are great examples of all the financial tables and great stories/scenarios to illustrate the more abstract concepts. Many of the chapters get you thinking about factors in a pharmacy, changes you'd take, and if these are possible/economically achieveable/necessary.
