VOYA - Rachel Wadham
The complex interaction of the human senses with the brain allows humankind to experience and understand the world around them. The standard five senses offer much information, but hunger, thirst, balance, pain, and tension also add to that sensory load. The way the various information inputs combine to interact with the mind enables mundane as well as miraculous things to happen. In this fascinating work, award-winning nonfiction author Jackson offers a unique glimpse into how humans experience the world. Various interesting topics, from phantom limb pain to how the blind can see with sound waves, are briefly addressed. The text is fast and fun to read, and it includes just enough information to cover the topic without letting it get too boring or technical. Supported by quotes from scientists and researchers in the field as well as stories from real people with unusual conditions, the narrative is equal parts hard-science reporting and warm, human-interest story. In addition, side bar "mind tinglers" allow readers to go beyond the text to further explore many captivating concepts, but sadly these tidbits vary widely in the quality of the thought-provoking issues they address and some could have been left out entirely. Topped off with photographs and diagrams that deftly illustrate concepts in the text, this book will appeal to any teen with an inquiring mind that wants to know more about the human experience. Children's Literature - Rachel Miller
Very often minds do things that are not expected; at times, they can predict certain things. Scientists have found various reasons for these strange occurrences, such as that our minds sometimes fill in spaces without us even knowing it. Research has found that certain types of paranormal behavior is real and normal. For example, animals are sometimes found to have an extra sense when it comes to weather changes, impending catastrophes, and sometimes even medical situations. Humans can also experience dreams that reflect feelings or behaviors they may not have recognized before the dream. Dreams will sometimes be very telling about what may come in the future, because people have instincts about objects or other people that is reflective of their behavior. Some humans are able to sense things through music or food. All of these feelings and intuitions have scientific research to back them up. This descriptive young adult book gives examples of each of these concepts. Readers are is able to relate, on some level, to what is discussed. The glossary of common sense terms at the back of the book is a helpful reference to all the phenomena that is mentioned throughout the text. People who are interested in strange occurrences will find this to be a fascinating and easy to read. The images are explained accurately and used appropriately to enhance understanding. Students with an interest in the weird and unusual will find this book fascinating. It begins with an introduction to human senses and continues with chapters devoted to phenomena such as the "sixth sense," synethesia, and intuition. One of the most interesting sections discusses animals that use their senses in unusual ways, such as dogs that are trained to detect cancer by scent. The author liberally incorporates well-documented quotes from experts. Scientific explanations for many of the phenomena are evenly balanced with personal anecdotes from individuals with unusual experiences. The black-and-white illustrations and photographs are plentiful enough to make the text accessible to reluctant readers. Accurate, entertaining nonfiction.-Lindsay Cesari, Baldwinsville School District, NY

Kirkus Reviews
Based on the premise that our senses "help us navigate the world," Jackson explores how they affect our lives and delves beyond the five familiar senses to include coverage of topics such as dreaming, intuition and even the super senses of animals. Each chapter generally opens with short personal accounts that bring a human element to the text, which helps to anchor some of the more offbeat topics and to complement the sometimes heavy facts and research presented from government agencies and higher education. Black-and-white stock photos, figures and tables appear throughout, helping to break down complicated scientific concepts, especially anatomy topics. Aiming to educate and pique reader curiosity, the author includes a listing of related websites for further exploration, a glossary of "common sense" terms and detailed source notes. Additionally, six one-page "Mind Tinglers" challenge readers to actively think about and experiment with their own senses, making the text both educational and fun. (Nonfiction. 9-12)
