"Bryant's writing style makes the text easy to read and understand."
Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The Canadian series “Women’s Hall of Fame” explores the careers of ten dynamic women who have founded successful businesses. Starting with Americans Madam C.J. Walker, who made millions in the early twentieth century by providing hair products for African-American women, and designer Dorothy Shaver (chief executive of Lord & Taylor in the 1930s and 1940s), Bryant then introduces readers to outstanding entrepreneurs of today. These women are from varied economic and ethnic backgrounds, but each shares certain qualities that have led to success: quick intelligence, self-confidence, and fierce determination to follow a dream. Brilliant financier Naina Lal Kidwai has become a role model for ambitious young women in India. Readers may recognize American Sheryl Sandberg, now a Facebook executive and bestselling author (Lean In, Knopf, 2013) about women and work. Sandberg had the advantage of an elite education, in contrast to Tanzanian Susan Mashibe from a traditional society that seldom saw women as business leaders. Her hard work, persistence, and positive approach took her to Michigan for study, to a pilot’s license, and to the founding of TanJet, her own thriving aviation company. Finally, Bryant features three young Canadian entrepreneurs with a sense of social responsibility. Nicole Robertson, part-Cree journalist, heads her company, Muskwa Productions, broadcasting news of Aboriginal achievements and culture. Kelsey Ramsden excelled at sports, worked hard at her education, and formed her own creative construction company. Jodi Glover from Ontario has always loved both water and math--combining her interests, she has built a successful water-treatment business devoted to bringing clean water to the world. Notably, each of these diverse women has received many honors and shares essential qualities with the others. Sidebars and a bibliography offer readers information about other successful women entrepreneurs. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft AGERANGE: Ages 12 up.
