No Limit Hold'em is a very tough game. That's the bad news. But here is some good news: You can learn. How do I know you can learn? Because I was not always a winning player, and I learned. If I can go from "dead money" to World Poker Tour champion, there is no doubt that others can as well.

The greatest poker players in the world share five qualities:

  1. They are invariably aggressive. Aggressive poker is winning poker. They apply pressure to their opponents with bets and raises.
  2. They are patient. They wait for situations at the table that are profitable.
  3. They are courageous. They don't need the stone-cold nuts to bet, call, or raise.
  4. They are observant. They watch their opponents during every hand.
  5. They are always working on their game and want to be even better players. They talk about the game with other players. They practice. They read poker books. They analyze their play and work to plug "leaks" that have developed.

These five qualities are all that are necessary to be a great, winning player. The first four qualities you can learn and develop. You already have the fifth quality — you bought this book so you're working on your game.

There are many ways to win at this game. I intend in this book to write exactly how I play. You may disagree with many of the plays that I recommend here. Good. I want you to approach this book not as a definitive guide for how to play, but as a catalyst for thinking about the game.

Not once in his book did he profess to know the only way to play. I drew inspiration from Mr. Penick's book and his straightforward approach to teaching a very difficult game.

Take your time with this book. No matter how thoroughly you digest the contents, you'll need to play thousands of hands against all kinds of competition before things will really "click" for you. Take your time. Your bankroll will not be built overnight. Grow it slowly. There will be setbacks. There will be bad beats. But, there will be endless amounts of joy as your game improves.

    Surprising

    Gordon's book is perhaps best summarized within in his own book, 'A book to rank with Doyle Brunson's Super System and David Sklansky's The Theory of Poker, Phil Gordon's Little Green Book deserves a spot on the shelf of every serious student of the game.' It is exactly that, one of the most informative and educational books available. His writing and teaching style is fairly straightforward and enjoyable to follow. For the beginner to intermediate player he'll slow down to allow time to catch up while giving the advanced expert players advice that is truly helpful. He directly quotes from various other excellent poker texts as well as The Art of War. The Art of War is very nicely tied into Gordon's teachings and makes you think twice about what he just discussed in the previous section. More experienced players will find some of the teachings basic in nature, but at the same time they'll find this book to be very valuable and find themselves better players for having read it, I know that's how I felt. It's almost impossible to not come away from this book a better player, great book for sure.

    Terrible e-book

    This book is incomplete. It refers to pages that are not in the book. i.e. tells you to look at the chart on page 186 and the book has 149 pages. Also, the tables and charts that are included in the book are not laid out correctly. Probably a good book, but DO NOT BUY THE E-VERSION OR YOU WILL BE SORRY. Or maybe angry. They wouldn't allow me to rate this under one star. I would give it between zero and minus one.

    Turned my game around

    I started playing online poker not long ago and was habitually losing just about every session. I realized I needed help and have now finished Phil Gordon's Little Green Book and it has turned my game around. I am now beginning to have more winning sessions than losing sessions. This is a very easy and entertaining read with some practical examples. I only wish it had lots more material as it left me hungry for more.

    Listen to in the car

    I've had this cd for over a year and I listen to it in the car. It has helped me improve my game especially in tournaments. His advice on stealing blinds in tournaments is essential and his math is made easy. I'm still wrapping my brain around having to call with 4 7 offsuit when the odds dictate....haven't quite gotten that advanced yet. This is a very helpful book and I recommend it if you are a beginner or intermediate player.

    A Book to Make You Think

    Poker is a very nuanced and situational game. There's a million books out there that strive to offer strategy. This is a book that helps you learn to think for yourself and develop your own style of play.

    Highly recommended.

    You might try Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. A lot of poker books pollute themselves with a lot of 'I did this at the WSOP' or 'I got killed by doing such and such at the WPT'. Not Phil's book. It's like a No Limit reference book. A very good resource without a lot of blah blah blah. Also, if you are a total beginner, he doesn't use a lot of poker jargon and when he does he explains it, unlike many poker books. This little book is literally packed with some of the best Hold'em info you can buy for 20 bucks.
